Do you have family who lived in Poland? According to the YIVO institute, around 85% of Jews in the US have Polish roots!

And although most Polish Jews fled or were killed in the N**i Holocaust, there's still a strong Jewish community thriving in Poland today.

Here are some photos of our congregant Anna Klein's presentation about "Jewish Life in Poland" last month at the synagogue. Thanks, Anna, for sharing your experience and knowledge!

We are so grateful to be learning from the Hertzes, from the students of Middle Creek High School, and from Dr. Seth Kotch about how they have mapped and commemorated histories of violence: from the N**i Holocaust to North Carolina lynchings.

Some photos from our beautiful Sacred Burial event with the Religious Practices committee this morning. No document containing the name of God in Hebrew can be thrown out or burned, so in accordance with Jewish ritual, we interred our retired prayerbooks in a grave next to our synagogue. Our people do truly love our books!

Many thanks to Rabbi Lara Lieber for her teaching about genizas, and to the incredible leadership of Ken Caudell,Rena Fraadee, Ray Jones, and Andrew Geller for pulling this event together. The 6th grade religious school class led an incredible service outside before we handed books down.

Next Thursday evening, Mizrahi Jewish scholar Ella Habiba Shohat will speak at Carolina Center for Jewish Studies at the UNC Friday Center in a community lecture, free and open to the public.

The lecture will address our assumptions about an Arab / Jewish divide — and the ambiguous position of Arab Jews within that dichotomy. It should be of interest to the Judea Reform community!

This lecture will offer a genealogical reading of the gradual splitting of the once-linked Semitic figure into “Arab” and “Jew” and its ramifications for contemporary discourses about Jews and Muslims. Examining the shifting Orientalist imaginary in the wake of the Enlightenment and colonial...

This workshop will offer insight and analysis into the ways that antisemitism, anti-Black racism and white supremacy intersect, and will enable participants to think through examples in their own lives when they've seen and felt this connection. We'll wrestle with the roles and responsibilities that...
