Flashback to August 2008

A memorable moment 18 years ago! Our church family honored then North East member and Olympian Mechelle Lewis - fresh from the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China as a member of the U.S. Track & Field team. The joy in the sanctuary was unmatched, especially as North East youth placed symbolic medals of faith around her neck, celebrating not just her athletic success but her faith, discipline, and God given purpose.

In the semifinal heat, Mechelle ran her Women’s 4x100 meter relay race with determination… holding firmly to the baton as she ran the second leg. But even more, she showed the world what it looks like to represent Christ with excellence — even when you watch your lifelong dream literally fall to the ground during the team’s next baton exchange, and you choose to respond with grace over anger and disappointment.

These photos remind us: run your race, trust God’s path, and press toward the goal.

An Awesome Anniversary!

Rev. Dr. Randell Cain blessed the house with a powerful message, “When He Steps Out of the Pulpit,” reminding us that our Pastor's integrity, humility, and high-stepping praise don’t stop at the sanctuary doors — they follow him everywhere he goes.

We thank God for our Pastor, Rev. Claude W. Dunston, whose character speaks louder than any title, and whose life reflects the love of Christ both in and out of the pulpit.

Grateful for the celebration and for the close fellowship of Rev. and Mrs. Cain and the Zion Memorial Missionary Baptist Church family (Winston-Salem) who worshipped, praised and prayed alongside us.

Grateful for the Word. Grateful for our Pastor … and equally thankful for Lady Lisa Dunston, whose loving spirit, quiet strength, and willingness to serve and sacrifice blesses the entire North East church family as well.

Tomorrow we celebrate. Today, let’s pray.

Sunday, August 23, North East celebrates the 9th Pastoral Anniversary of our Pastor Claude Wendell Dunston, a true prayer warrior who continually lifts up the Universal Church, our North East family, his own family, and the entire community. His ministry is rooted in shepherding and intercession — standing in the gap, calling on God’s protection, healing, and blessings for all of us.

When our Male Chorus ministers “Jesus Be a Fence”, in song tomorrow, it’s also a reminder of the very prayer Pastor prays over this church day after day: That God would surround us… Cover us… Keep us… Guide us.

North East, are you returning that same love? Right now take the time to pray for the man who prays for us — for renewed strength, fresh anointing, continued vision, and God’s covering over his life and leadership.

We thank God for Pastor Dunston’s faithful heart for service!

Surrendered? Or Not?

North East and friends, let’s be real for a moment. Have we fully surrendered our ALL to God — or just the parts that feel comfortable?

We sing the praise & worship songs with passion… but does our daily walk match the lyrics we love? Do we consistently put Jesus first — in decisions, in habits, in relationships, in attitude? Do we honor Christ with our whole heart, or only when it’s convenient?

The Word calls us higher:

“Present your bodies a living sacrifice…” (Romans 12:1). Surrender isn’t partial. It’s complete. It’s daily. It’s costly.

“He must increase, but I must decrease.” (John 3:30). Humility isn’t optional. Christ must take precedence over our ego, our plans, our preferences.

“Submit to God. Resist the devil…” (James 4:7). Submission is power. Resistance is protection. Surrender is strength.

True surrender means:
- laying down our will;
- elevating Christ above everything;
- walking in holiness; Living out the gospel we sing; and
- choosing obedience over excuses.

Let’s stop giving God pieces of us. Let’s give Him ALL — heart, mind, lifestyle, worship, decisions, future - for real.

Blessings In A Backpack

It’s Back-to School season for 2026-27 (with Durham’s year-round school already in session having started July 20th and traditional schools set to begin August 24th). North East is grateful to support the BackPack Buddies program year-round—providing children from low income households with 10–12 lbs. of nutritious, kid friendly food over holiday breaks and weekends.

North East volunteers purchase and deliver these items directly to Eastway Elementary here in Durham, ensuring students have what they need when school meals aren’t available. Members of our AIM small bible study coordinated North East's May 2026 outreach that supported many families over the summer break.

This is compassion in action. This is community. This is North East.
