I hope you know someone like Daniel. I know if you have someone in your life who is that consistently faithful person who is always there for you to give you good news when you need it, to give you bad news when you need it? That person who will tell you when you've done a wonderful job, you're doing really well. But that person is also there and the same love to say you are not doing so well and you need to get it together.

What ordinary habit has most helped you grow spiritually?

If you're hoping that your faith will just suddenly come into play when you're thrown in the lion's den, you are in trouble. Because your faith is built for the lion's den. In the consistency of all the unseen and quiet moments of following Jesus Christ. Daniel knew the edict, but Daniel didn't in that moment said about doing something about the edict. Daniel didn't gather his friends together and say, we got to fight. Daniel didn't gather and say, you know what? I'm going to gather all the people I can. We're going to stop this. We're going to fight this. What did Daniel do? He just went back home yet again, went into his upper room yet again, got on his knees yet again, and prayed just like he always did.

Like we read at the beginning of worship where Jesus says, taking up the cross daily, daily, in the very ordinary, quiet, uneventful days and hours which frankly make up most of our lives, right? Most of our lives, most of our days, most of our living is pretty ordinary. And that's not at all negative, by the way. That is not at all negative, because the beauty of God and the gospel of God infuses the ordinary with wonder and grace and so much love.
