Duke Cru

Duke Cru “Cru” is short for Campus Crusade for Christ, an inter-denominational Christian ministry that has been at Duke for over 40 years.

We exist to help students connect with Jesus Christ and with each other during their time in college. Many students in Cru are professing Christians, but we welcome all students, regardless of spiritual background. Whether you are a “believer” or a “doubter,” new to Christianity or burned out on it, firmly committed or consistently undecided, we hope that you find our community to be a fun and wel

coming place to spend some time. If you have any questions about Duke Cru, contact our Campus Director, Charlie Densmore:

Welcome back, y’all! Can you believe it’s FDOC? As you begin classes today and catch up with friends today, take a few minutes to pray. Invite God into your semester and begin the semester in a posture of dependence on Him. Swipe to read a liturgy for the start of classes.

We hear often that we can model our prayers after the book of Psalms, but we don’t talk about why we should do this. Learning how to pray like David and the other psalmists can deepen our relationship with God and play a role in our sanctification.

This week, we want to challenge you to pick a psalm, respond to the 4 questions, and practice praying through it. Spend some time processing what the Lord might be teaching you through that psalm.

Hi! My name is Lillian and I am one of the senior interns. I was born and raised in Maryland. At Duke, I am a Biology major with a minor in Psychology on the Pre-Health Track. Outside of Cru, I am a member of an SLG, a tour guide, and a counselor for Camp Kesem. On campus, you can probably find me cheering at basketball games, spontaneously singing/dancing, or eating a Chicken Pesto Crepe from Cafe.

I joined Cru because I wanted a Christian Community that would support me as I learned what it meant to walk with God away from home. After attending a few weekly meetings and bible studies, I knew that this was the community I was looking for. Whether it was going to the state fair, watching the basketball games in the atrium, or randomly meeting up with people for lunch, there was always someone there to talk/laugh/make memories with. These people will always have a special place in my heart. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions about me, life at Duke, Cru, or just want someone to chat with. I love getting to know people and I cannot wait to meet you🥰

Jackson is a rising senior from West Point, NY majoring in Civil Engineering. He is a 4 year scholarship ROTC cadet and hopes to commission in the Army in either the Engineering or Infantry branches. Jackson plays the piano for Cru worship team, has been a freshman bible study and life group leader, and has served on Cru leadership for three years. Jackson wanted to be a senior intern because of the impact that previous interns have made on him. He wants to help make Cru a place where sharing your faith becomes natural and comfortable.

Neil (center) is a rising senior from Prince George, Virginia majoring in Biomedical and Electrical Engineering. He can often be seen on campus at Panda Express or on the intramural fields either refereeing or pursuing his third championship t-shirt. He is also a member of the reigning back-to-back Isle of Cru Beach Volleyball Tournament championship team and is looking for a three peat next spring break. He says that the reason he joined Cru was because of free food during O-week, but he has stayed and now become an intern because of the awesome people in Cru.

Fun fact: he has taken both guys sitting next to him to the ER.

Hey y’all!

My name is Stephanie and I’m super pumped to be able to serve as one of Cru’s senior interns next year! I’m from Austin, Texas, and studying Public Policy, Visual and Media Studies, and Journalism. On campus, I am also the editor-in-chief of FORM Magazine, an art, design, and travel publication, where I often photograph and write. In my spare time, you can usually find me in the Keohane atrium or out at a coffee shop in Durham. My freshman year, I came to Cru after hearing about it from my roommate, and there I was able to find and be challenged by a community of believers, and it has been one of the most impactful investments I’ve made for my life and faith. Now looking back as a senior, my favorite memories at Duke have come from the people I met in Cru: from basketball games, tenting, and late night drives, to Cru’s barn party and spring break trip, Isle of Cru. If you see me on campus, ask me about Texas, my favorite restaurants in Durham, or why I’m not a Spotify user. Can’t wait to see everyone again!

We acknowledge that Christ followers, including ourselves, in the past have failed to confront racial injustice. In particular, we recognize that this complicity has contributed to the ongoing systemic oppression of the black community. We grieve and repent our sin, and in the power of the Holy Spirit, we are committed to seeking change in our hearts and in our world.

Furthermore, as a ministry, we are committed to pursuing unity and diversity as a body of believers with a desire to more fully represent the picture that God gives us of the Kingdom of Heaven. (Rev 9:7)

What does the Bible say about justice? A LOT. Too much for one post, but we can try to touch on a few main points...

Justice matters because God is just, and all His works are just. Jesus’s mission was to carry out justice, and in doing so identified with the oppressed and marginalized. He graciously suffered and died an unjust death to offer justification for any who place their faith in Him. God clearly calls those who follow Him to live justly.

We see examples in these passages of the justice that we are called to live out as Christians through love, humility, mercy, equity, advocacy, and generosity.

We invite you study these passages, and more. Pray. Seek the Lord. As you see the injustice around you, what is God calling you to do?

[2/4] We hope that you have taken some time to acknowledge and join in the lament and mourning of the Black community (and listened to the voice shared in our first post). In 2 Corinthians 7:10 Paul says, “For Godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret.”. This lament, this mourning, this grief is our natural immediate response to the suffering of others, yet we are not without hope. Grief is a necessary first step toward true healing and change. Let this hope in mourning be what moves us forward as we confront implicit racism in our hearts and systemic racism in our society.

➡️Swipe to see how we are confronting implicit racism, and some resources we are learning from. We do not have all the answers but invite you to join us on the journey.

What does the Bible say about doing justice? What does it look like for Christians to seek unity and justice? We’ll share more of our thoughts on these questions in our next post.

Read the lament of an African American mother in response to the sin of racism, and the hope she holds onto in Jesus.

Let is listen and hear, let us mourn together, and hope together, and stand together. (Link to the article “The Heart of a Grieving Black Mother” in our Bio)
