While the governments of the world are failing to end the horrific cycle of violence and oppression in Gaza, all hope is not lost. This past week, another 50 boats in the Global Sumud Flotilla attempted to nonviolently break the naval blockade of Gaza, establish a sustained civilian presence, and deliver life-saving humanitarian aid. On these boats were 430 compassionate human beings from 40 different countries around the world – doctors, nurses, lawyers, artists, teachers, clergy, seafarers, war crimes investigators, etc. All the boats were intercepted by Israeli armed forces in international waters and the activists were detained, humiliated, and abused before being released.
A statement from GSF read, “While the world’s eye is trained on the suffering of our participants, we cannot emphasize enough that this is a mere glimpse of the brutality Israel imposes daily on (over 9,400) Palestinian hostages.” Meanwhile, at least 75,000 Palestinians have been killed in the siege on Gaza, including over 850 since the ceasefire agreement on October 10. Humanitarian aid into Gaza is currently blocked and apartheid oppression of the Palestinians is increasing in the West Bank.
The Arabic word "sumud" translates to “steadfastness” and “resilience”. While the physical cargo carried by the flotillas is symbolic and falls far short of resolving the massive humanitarian crisis, the psychological impact of knowing thousands of volunteers from dozens of countries risk interception to deliver aid is a well-documented message of solidarity acknowledged by the people of Gaza.
The WSBC Voices for Love in Action mission group encourages you to call on Representative Foushee and Senators Tillis and Budd to halt the war on Iran and Lebanon, to support delivery of urgently needed aid to Gaza, and to prevent future weapon sales to Israel while it commits genocide in Gaza. Another helpful way to respond is to donate to MECA, the Middle East Children’s Alliance, which provides emergency assistance to families in Gaza.
