“And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting.”

ROMANS 1:28

Three times in the first chapter of Romans, God speaks of giving people up: “God gave them up” (Romans 1:24); “God gave them up” (Romans 1:26); and “God gave them over” (Romans 1:28). The old‑time preachers used to call that, “When the lights go out on the road to Hell.” This is when the Holy Spirit of God no longer speaks to a man. In Genesis 6:3, God said before the flood, “My Spirit shall not strive with man forever.” Don’t get the idea that the Holy Spirit’s conviction is going to stay in your heart and in your life if you continually reject Him. You may come to a place of sudden destruction in your spirit as well as in your mind, a place in which the Holy Spirit of God no longer speaks to you and God no longer draws you. God has given us this warning in advance as a means of His grace. We must respond while we can.

The idea of God giving us over to ourselves should give us fear, but that fear has a purpose. What is the goal of this godly fear?
What is the role of those who know Christ in warning others to listen to God’s conviction while they can?

Ask God today who He is calling you to speak with about the offer of His forgiveness. Ask Him for wisdom and next steps in obedience in this regard.

“And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance.”

ROMANS 5:3

For several centuries, a village was known for its exquisite and fragile porcelain. Especially striking were its urns, which were as high as tables and as wide as chairs. They were admired around the globe for their strong form and delicate beauty. Legend has it that when each urn was finished, there was one final step. The artist broke it and then put it back together with gold filigree. An ordinary urn was then transformed into a priceless work of art. What seemed finished wasn’t complete until it was broken.

Men throw broken things away. But God never uses anything until He first breaks it: “A broken and a contrite heart—These, O God, You will not despise” (Psalm 51:17). God is trying to break your life for eternal good.

How has God used the broken things in your life to build godly character?
How has your faith grown stronger through the hardship you have faced?

Journal today about some of the ways God has used the broken things in your life to build stronger character and faith in Him.

“Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.”

HEBREWS 4:14-16

What do these inspired words tell us about Jesus? They tell us about the virgin-born Son of God. His life began with a miraculous birth. Then He lived a miraculous life. Jesus Christ is absolutely unique. You can trust Him and trust His way in every circumstance.

The Bible describes a sinless man who often was misunderstood but never was distracted by the temptations of the world. He was a man of wisdom who cared about God’s direction more than the affirmation of the Pharisees. He was tempted in every way but did not sin. He cared for the people that would turn around and hurt Him. What an incredible life He lived!

When we consider what to do in a situation or how to live, Jesus gave us a life well-lived to follow. He endured rejection and pain and yet did not sin. He is the One you can look to when you don’t know what to do. He will fill you with His life and His way so that you can live for Him.

What stands out to you about how Jesus lived?
What are some ways you need to look to the example of Jesus today instead of going your own way?

Discuss with a friend what is special and unique about Jesus. Ask that person how he or she looks to the example of Jesus in daily life.

“He who covers his sins will not prosper, but whoever confesses and forsakes them will have mercy.”

PROVERBS 28:13

David tried to cover up his sin by having Uriah killed. Today’s verse reminds us that those who cover their sin will never prosper. Oh, would to God that as soon as David committed that sin with Bathsheba, he had said, “Oh my God, what have I done? God, forgive me. God, have mercy. God, I'll bring a sacrifice and make restitution. God, have mercy.” God would have had mercy, God would have forgiven him, and God would have cleansed him. It still would have been a terrible sin, but the Bible says to “Agree with your adversary quickly, while you are on the way with him, lest your adversary deliver you to the judge, the judge hand you over to the officer, and you be thrown into prison” (Matthew 5:25). That means if you’ve done wrong, quickly confess it. As soon as you know, confess it, and don’t let that sin build up in your heart. But instead, David spent a year without confessing that sin.

When was a time you had an opportunity to confess sin but instead sought to hide it?
How can we learn from these times so that we respond differently in the future?

Confess before God any sin that is lingering in your life today.

“Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring forth.”

PROVERBS 27:1

There is nobody so bad he or she cannot be saved. There is no one so good he or she need not be saved. There are many, however, who are going to be lost because of their self-righteous attitudes. They never repent of their sin. They never receive Christ as their Savior. But I’m going to tell you why I believe most people hear me or any other Gospel preacher, and then go out but are still lost. It’s not because they rebel against God or disbelieve, and it’s not because they’re self-righteous. I believe most of the people who hear the Gospel message and remain unsaved are lost because of procrastination. They know that they need to be saved, and they say, “One of these days I’m going to get saved.” But they keep putting it off. Why? Well, they got by yesterday without Jesus, they got by the day before without Jesus, and the day before that, and so on. So, they assume that tomorrow will be like yesterday. This is a dangerous assumption and one no one should make.

How have you been guilty of procrastinating in your faith?
What is God calling you to do today? How will you respond?

Take action to respond in obedience to God in an area in which you have procrastinated.

“He who hears you hears Me, he who rejects you rejects Me, and he who rejects Me rejects Him who sent Me.”

LUKE 10:16

No man is prepared to serve the Lord until he’s first heard the Lord. One of the marks of all true Christians is that they have heard the Lord. Notice in today’s verse, Jesus put “he who hears” in opposition to those who are false witnesses. Now, what did Jesus say in John 10? Jesus said in John 10:27, “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.” The Lord doesn’t know anyone unless they’ve heard His voice. “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them.” You cannot be a Christian without hearing the voice of the Lord Jesus Christ. Have you heard His voice?

Have you heard the voice of the Lord?
If yes, how so? If not, how might you seek to hear Him?

Take time to listen to the voice of the Lord today. Do this through Bible reading or listen to Him through prayer.

“It is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment.”

HEBREWS 9:27

Is there a chance after death? Absolutely not. There are some people who teach and preach that we have a second chance—after we die—to get right with God. That is false, that is heresy, and I do not want to leave that hope to you. If you want to be saved, you may be saved. If you need to be saved, Christ can save you. And whosoever will is able to come, but I want to tell you with all of the urgency, emergency, function, and unction of my soul, you will not come to the judgment of God and be able to throw yourself on the mercy of the court and say, “God I now believe; have mercy, God. Please save me.” If you want mercy, you may have it. If you want grace, you may have it. If you want forgiveness, you may have it. But you must have it in this life. The Bible says now is the accepted time. Today is the day of salvation. The Bible says it is appointed for man to die once; after this, there is not a second chance, there is judgment.

What is the urgency of today’s verse?
Have you turned to Christ for salvation? If not, how do you need to respond? If so, why should you be compelled to share with others?

Make a list of people you will pray for regularly to come to know Christ. Pray that these people will not reject the opportunity to know Christ in this life.

“For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted the heavenly gift, and have become partakers of the Holy Spirit, and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come, if they fall away, to renew them again to repentance, since they crucify again for themselves the Son of God, and put Him to an open shame.”

HEBREWS 6:4-6

This passage tells us it is impossible to renew some people to repentance. It is absolutely, totally, one hundred percent impossible that these people could ever repent and get right with God. Who are they? These are people who were enlightened; their eyes were opened. These are people who have tasted the power of the Word of God. The writer was not talking about people who have been saved and then lose their salvation. He meant people who come to the very brink of salvation, who with their eyes wide open, crucify Jesus again, so to speak. They refuse Christ, they trample the precious blood of the Lord Jesus Christ beneath their feet. And they know what they're doing—they do this after they know the truth.

What warning is there in this passage?
What good news is there for those who read this passage and are struck by the truth?

Take time this week to share the truth of the Gospel with another person. Pray that God will do what only He can.

“Wisdom calls aloud outside; she raises her voice in the open squares. She cries out in the chief concourses, at the openings of the gates in the city she speaks her words.”

PROVERBS 1:20-21

The invitation of wisdom is a public invitation, not just to a chosen few. God loves all people and wisdom speaks to all people. The voice of the Bible is for whosoever will come. Some people join secret societies to gain certain knowledge—things other people are not supposed to know. But if it’s so good, you ought to give it away to everybody. Jesus said He had done nothing in secret (John 18:20). Friend, if it’s wonderful and good, it ought to be public and for anyone. I’m so grateful that the Lord God loves the whole wide world.

Do you know what the Bible says? In Matthew 10:27, Jesus said, “Whatever I tell you in the dark, speak in the light; and what you hear in the ear, preach on the housetops.” Let the whole world know that Jesus saves and that the invitation of wisdom is a public invitation. We hear people say, “keep the faith.” Not only should you keep it, but you also ought to give it away. As far as I’m concerned, if you don’t want to give it away, you ought to give it up, because what you have is not real. You’ll never convince me that you know the real joy of the Lord Jesus if you do not want to share it.

Why must our faith be one we long to give away?
How has God “given away” the truth about Himself? How has that changed your life?

Select a specific person to whom you want to give the faith away. Take action toward sharing the truth of the Gospel with that person.
