Did you know St. Philip’s shares 10% of our operating budget with organizations serving Durham and beyond? Each month, we’re highlighting one of these ministry partners and the work they’re doing in our community.

This month, meet The Stagville Memorial Project, which honors the lives and legacies of people enslaved at Historic Stagville Plantation. The project centers the voices of Stagville descendants and brings their stories into Durham’s public spaces through art and community engagement.

St. Philip’s outreach funding is helping support an exciting new phase of this work: Durham artists Stephen Hayes and Sherrill Roland, along with Cricket Forge, are developing public artwork that will bring the Stagville story to downtown Durham. This summer, Stagville descendants met with the artists to respond to early concepts and help shape the designs, with installation expected in 2027.

We’re grateful to support this important work of remembrance, truth-telling, and deeper understanding of Durham’s history.

Welcome back! It was wonderful to see St. Philip’s full of life on Sunday as we kicked off a new program year. Children and youth returned to formation at 10am, making a joyful procession from the 9am service to the atria and classrooms.

We’re so glad to begin another year of learning, growing, and being together. (And huge thanks to the volunteers and parents who make our programs happen!)

🎶 Beautiful music, meaningful moments, and a change of scenery! Last Saturday, the St. Philip’s Choir gathered for a retreat at Duke Divinity School's Goodson Chapel, where they spent time strengthening their vocal technique, growing together as an ensemble, and filling a beautiful space with music.

A special thank you to Dan Huff for sharing his time and talents, and for helping the choir dig deeper into the meaning behind the music and how they bring it to life through their singing. The choir is coming back to St. Philip’s inspired, refreshed, and ready to make a joyful noise! 🎵

On Sunday, we gathered to celebrate Emily Sparks as she concluded more than eight years of ministry with St. Philip’s families.

We shared hugs and memories, gave thanks for the many ways Emily has loved and cared for this community, and surrounded her in prayer as she begins a new chapter.

Like so many, we’re mourning the death of Dolly Parton this week – an extraordinary artist and human whose life reflected a deeply rooted Christian faith. As the world remembers Dolly, our own parish administrator Patrick is helping tell part of her story.

You may know Patrick from St. Philip’s office – but he’s also a scholar whose academic work includes the theology of Dolly Parton and Dollywood. Earlier this week, the Associated Press interviewed Patrick for a story exploring Dolly’s Christian faith and her embrace of the LGBTQ+ community.

Patrick, who writes about Dollywood in his upcoming book, Theology in Place: Christianity, Geography, and the American South, reflects on the unlikely mix of people who find a place there – and on how Dolly helped shape his own understanding of faith.
