September is National Su***de Prevention Awareness Month. The International Association for Su***de Prevention this year has focused on "Changing the Narrative on Su***de." Too often, su***de and suicidal ideation meet only stigma and unhelpful silence. The new narrative requires your direct, non-judgmental, practical, compassionate, and hopeful engagement with a person’s suffering. It means asking, "Are you thinking about su***de?", listening to and exploring their answer, supporting them non-judgmentally, and helping them create, resource, and carry out a different plan. It's a skill you can learn.
If you or someone you know is struggling with suicidal thoughts, call or text 988 for the national hotline, 1-866-488-7386 for the Trevor Project LGBTQ+ hotline, or 877-235-4525 for the NC Hope Line.
For more information about what you can say and do to help prevent su***de, click the link below to enroll in an upcoming local A.S.I.S.T. training.
