Salamu Alaykum! Here is an update from Duke MSA on actions taken to support the Black Lives Matter movement:
In solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement, Duke MSA is organizing a donation challenge for all of us to come together, create accountability within the Muslim community, and contribute resources to support the Black community.
We are calling for MSA members and alumnae, particularly non-Black individuals and especially those with class privilege, to join us in donating to funds and initiatives that support Black liberation. We understand that everyone has a different capacity to give; rather than setting a goal for a specific dollar amount, we're challenging our community to collectively make 100 donations of any size to funds/organizations! We wanted to take this opportunity to remind all of us that fighting for racial justice is a movement that needs to last beyond a single news cycle, and that no matter the size of your donation (from $1 to $50), you still have an impact with your support.
To record your donations, please visit the Google form below. If youβre looking for a place to start, you can find a list of resources and places to donate at bit.ly/BlackLivesAction. When you record your donations below, the counter tracking our progress will automatically update at bit.ly/DukeMSADonateCount
Contributing to bail funds or community organizations alone will not be enough to secure Black liberation, but this first step towards accountability within the Muslim community is intended to 1) empower Black organizers on the front lines who know their needs better than anyone, and 2) create a framework for engaging in anti-racist work as a community in the future.
Thank you!
