Durham Congregations in Action

Durham Congregations in Action DCIA has been building bridges across boundaries in the Bull City since 1969.

DCIA seeks to engage and empower people of faith to create communities of justice and peace through common prayers and acts of compassion; and with prophetic courage, to act as advocates for the dignity and well-being of all persons, recognizing that behind every human face is the face of God.

Thanks to all who made it to our DCIA Annual Picnic! It was humid, but we all had a great time. Special thanks to our board member Larry for his eight years of service on DCIA’s board. You will be missed, Larry! We are grateful for the chance to celebrate you. And thanks to all who brought food and helped grill! We even had a nature walk and saw a rare heron. We do this work together, and moments like these help us build our solid relationships for the work ahead.

This past week, Bre visited Pasadena as part of professional development days with . There they learned about the Harambee Center and legacy of the late Dr. John Perkins on racial reconciliation, being present and ending poverty and violence, and living out love in the places that are often abandoned by all but the most desperate of those whose homes it has always been. What was once a Bloods stronghold near Altedena is now a youth leadership center and fire relief and family care center. We also learned about the Pasadena Restorative Justice Center, its learning history in place, and how they bring people of deep hurt and harm together for healing. Finally, some of us learned about Friends In Deed, an interfaith action organization that works together to care for unhoused people in Pasadena, CA. We remain grateful that DCIA and Durham orgs and congregations are joined in our collective efforts—even as far as California. Thank you!

Our prayers are with our Muslim siblings in San Diego today. No violence is justified. For all of our neighbors and siblings who are living in fear from these types of attacks, you are not alone. We are with you.

Two people ages 17 and 18 opened fire at the center Monday morning, police said. They were found minutes later dead of self-inflicted gunshot wounds, according to authorities.
