Olive Branch Ministry, based in Hickory, NC, uses faith-based harm reduction principles to meet substance users where they are, encourage recovery, and extend life in the communities they serve.

“The church supports us simply by allowing us to be here. They believe in the work that we do and for that, I will be forever grateful” - Rev. Michelle Mathis, Founder, Olive Branch Ministries

As the opioid crisis has made clear, substance use issues present major public health, economic, and social welfare challenges to North Carolinians. Churches Promoting Recovery, a project of the Theology, Medicine and Culture Initiative at Duke Divinity School, seeks to equip Christian communities in North Carolina and beyond to respond faithfully to substance use issues and to support and empower people affected by these challenges. Churches Promoting Recovery creates, curates, and disseminates theologically grounded resources for Christian faith communities of all denominations, and includes educational action guides for clergy and lay leaders alike.
