Paul says, “You therefore must endure hardship as a good soldier of Jesus Christ” (2 Tim. 2:3). The picture here is one of a battle and warfare with a need to endure the
hardships of war. Many people do not view God’s kingdom or Christianity in general as a battle or fight. Yet earlier in his letter to Timothy, Paul said to “fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life” (1 Tim. 6:12).
There is a good fight that God has called us to engage in, and it is not natural, nor is it
fought with natural weapons. Our fight is not even with people. Our battle is fought with spiritual weapons:
“For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places” (Eph. 6:12).
