One of the flesh's favorite disguises is competence.

Pride rarely announces itself by saying, "I don't need God." Instead, it whispers, "I've got this." It convinces us that our experience, intelligence, planning, or discipline are enough to navigate today. We still pray, still read our Bible, and still attend church, but deep down we are leaning on ourselves more than we are resting on the Lord.

That is exactly what Proverbs confronts.

Notice the contrast. We are either trusting the Lord with all our heart or leaning on our own understanding. There is no neutral ground. Every decision, every conversation, every temptation reveals which support we are standing on.

Walking by the Spirit begins long before a major life decision. It begins in the ordinary moments when we quietly say, "Father, I don't trust my instincts more than Your Word. Spirit of God, lead me."

The fruit of the Spirit does not grow in the soil of self-reliance. Love flourishes when we remember how deeply we have been loved. Joy grows when our confidence rests in Christ rather than circumstances. Peace comes when we surrender control. Patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control are not manufactured by determination but cultivated by abiding in Christ and yielding to His Spirit.

Today, pay attention to the subtle places where your heart wants to take control. The battle is often won not through dramatic acts of surrender but through hundreds of small ones.

Every time you choose dependence over independence, you are putting the flesh to death and making room for the Spirit's work.
