In times of trouble and distress we must take our eyes off our situation and look to the Lord, remembering God’s unwavering faithfulness to us throughout our lives. His faithfulness in the past is a great encouragement for us in the present. He has a specific purpose and plan for our lives, a purpose that He initiated as He formed us in our mothers’ wombs. He will complete that purpose (Ph. 1:6). God never promises to spare us from difficulties; in fact, He warns us that trials and persecution will be a part of our lives. But as with David, all of our trials contribute to His purpose. He uses them to accomplish His work through us and in us. He works all of our circumstances together for our good and for His ultimate purpose for us: that we be conformed to the image of His dear Son (Ro. 8:28–29).

Our God is a mighty warrior: He conquers all of our foes, every power or force that seeks to destroy us. It bears repeating that every good thing we have is from the Lord.
But he that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord” (2 Co. 10:17).

Embracing Patience

Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.
Romans 12:12

In my younger days, impatience often clouded my vision. I yearned for instant results, quick solutions, and immediate gratification. It wasn’t until I embraced the wisdom of patience that I truly understood its importance.

Patience involves more than waiting; it’s a virtue cultivated through endurance, trust, and faith. It teaches us to remain steadfast in times of trial and uncertainty, knowing that God’s timing is perfect.

The Scriptures remind us to “be patient in tribulation.” This doesn’t mean passively enduring difficulties but, rather, maintaining hope and perseverance in the midst of challenges. Patience allows us to navigate life’s twists and turns with grace and resilience.

Jesus, our ultimate example, demonstrated patience in his earthly ministry. He endured hardships, faced opposition, and waited for the appointed time to fulfill his mission. His patience was rooted in unwavering trust in God’s plan.

Practicing patience requires discipline and a shift in perspective. It’s about focusing on progress rather than perfection, trusting that each step forward, no matter how small, brings us closer to our goals.

When You Don’t Feel Like It

We all struggle with spiritual discouragement and lethargy. Some days our circumstances threaten to overwhelm us, and we struggle just to pray. Many times we just don’t feel like doing the things we know we should. For one reason or another, God sometimes seems far off and unreachable.

David faced times like these in his life. The Psalms are filled with verses that express his despair and feeling of abandonment.

Yet the Psalms also give us the key to living victoriously during the dark periods of life. Let’s take a quick look at Psalm 119:89-95*.

“Forever, O LORD, Your word is settled in heaven. Your faithfulness continues throughout all generations; You established the earth, and it stands. They stand this day according to Your ordinances…”

My circumstances or feelings have not changed God. He is the same God today as He was when He hung the stars in the sky, led the Israelites through the Red Sea , and fed the five thousand.

“For all things are Your servants…”

All things, even the things affecting me right now, are God’s servants. The circumstance, people, and events around me are all under God. They are His servants, designed to help and bless me spiritually.

“If Your law had not been my delight, Then I would have perished in my affliction. I will never forget Your precepts, For by them You have revived me. I am Yours, save me; For I have sought Your precepts. The wicked wait for me to destroy me; I shall diligently consider Your testimonies.”

Recalling God’s faithfulness and control over everything that touches us gives us strength to walk with God even when we feel like giving up in despair. After all, our feelings and circumstances have not changed God. He is perfectly capable of sustaining us if we will only let Him. We simply need to choose to delight in and diligently consider God’s precepts (His principles and character) despite how we feel. Choosing to delight in God might not be easy. It might even involve hard work. But only God can revive and save our soul from spiritual lethargy.

Next time you feel spiritually drained or inadequate, remember that you have a choice. You can wrap yourself up in excuses and self-pity, or you can choose to draw your strength from an unchanging God.

I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.

—PHILIPPIANS 4:13

Jesus had a humble heart. If He abides in us, pride will never dominate our lives. Jesus had a loving heart. If He dwells within us, hatred and bitterness will never rule us. Jesus had a forgiving and understanding heart. If He lives within us, mercy will temper our relationships with our fellowmen. Jesus had an unselfish heart. If He lives in us, selfishness will not predominate, but service to God and others will come before our selfish interests. You say, “That’s a big order!” I admit that. It would be impossible if you had to measure up to Him in your own strength and with your natural heart. Paul recognized that he could never attain this heart purity by his own striving.

“My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.”
‭‭James‬ ‭1‬:‭2‬-‭4‬ ‭KJV‬‬

We don’t usually see it while it’s happening, but God is working out His perfect plan for our lives behind the scenes. Though we want results right now, character development takes time and patience.

The Bible says that patience does a thorough work in our lives. When we wait on God, He makes us fully developed and complete, lacking nothing. I’ve discovered that patience is more than the ability to wait; it is the ability to keep a good attitude while waiting. This practical fruit of the Spirit comes from a close relationship with God—it manifests itself in a calm, positive attitude despite the circumstances.

“God’s timing is usually not our timing. We are in a hurry, but God isn’t. He takes time to do things right—He lays a solid foundation before He attempts to build a building. We are God’s building under construction. He is the Master Builder, and He knows what He is doing.

Prayer of the Day: Lord, when I am feeling impatient, help me to remember that Your timing is always perfect! I am relying on Your power and Your guidance, and I will trust You as You bring me to victory. In the name of Jesus, amen.

True
Faithfulness comes from the Hebrew root word ‘emet’ meaning ‘true’. In fact, the word ‘Amen’ is closely related to this word and simply means, ‘truly’ or ‘that’s true’. When we say God is faithful, we are saying that His character is true, that His Word is true, and that His promises are true. As believers, it can sometimes be difficult to believe in God’s faithfulness and sometimes we get confused as to what faithfulness really is. When we say God is faithful, we’re saying that God keeps His promises and is always true to His character. That’s one reason it’s so important that scripture has been written down so that we can remember and recall all the times that God has kept His promises.

It’s one thing to know that God is faithful, but it’s another thing to remember His faithfulness through the scriptures. When we declare God is faithful, we’re declaring our trust that He will act according to His promises and His character regardless of the situation we find ourselves in. It’s important to note that we don’t measure God’s faithfulness by how well our lives are going or how many of our prayers are answered. God’s faithfulness is measured on His unfailing Word not on our ever-changing circumstances or feelings.

Let’s recall today God’s faithfulness and find peace in the assurance of His steadfast and unchanging love for us. Amen.

My Share in the Miracle
John 2:1–12
Our Lord always demands our best. He will not work with our second-best. His gracious “extra” is given when our own resources are exhausted. We must do our best before our Master will do His miracle. We must “fill the water-pots with water”! We must bring “the five loaves and two fishes”! We must “let down the net”! We must be willing “to be made whole,” and we must make the effort to rise! Yes, the Lord will have my best. Our Lord transforms our best into His better. He changes water into wine. He turns the handful of seed into a harvest. Our aspirations become inspirations. Our willings become magnetic with the mystic power of grace. Our bread becomes sacramental, and He Himself is revealed to us at the feast. Our ordinary converse becomes a Divine fellowship, and “our hearts burn within us” as He talks to us by the way. And our Lord ever keeps His best wine until the last. “Greater things than these shall ye do!” “I will see you again,” and there shall be grander transformations still! “The best is yet to be.” “Dreams cannot picture a world so fair.” “Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither hath it entered into the heart of man to conceive the things which God hath prepared for them that love Him.
