From Scattered Bones to Living Hope
Ezekiel 37:4-7 (KJV)
Again he said unto me, Prophesy upon these bones, and say unto them, O ye dry bones, hear the word of the LORD.
Thus saith the Lord GOD unto these bones; Behold, I will cause breath to enter into you, and ye shall live:
And I will lay sinews upon you, and will bring up flesh upon you, and cover you with skin, and put breath in you, and ye shall live; and ye shall know that I am the LORD.
So I prophesied as I was commanded: and as I prophesied, there was a noise, and behold a shaking, and the bones came together, bone to his bone.
How many of us have heard the story of the dry bones? Songs have been written about it. Sermons have been preached from it. Scholars have examined it carefully. Yet the heart of the vision remains simple and searching.
God’s people were in exile in Babylon. Hope had withered. From every human angle the nation looked finished—scattered, lifeless, beyond recovery. Two words we can say changed everything. But God!
Those same two words have echoed through Scripture and history. They sustained a widow at the point of death. They shut the mouths of lions around Daniel. They preserved three young Hebrews in a furnace heated seven times hotter than usual. And they still change lives today—yours, mine, and the lives of people we love who once seemed beyond reach.
When the future feels uncertain, when loved ones remain lost, when situations appear out of control, the call is the same: wait on the Lord. Remain faithful men and women of the gospel. Trust that His word will not return void. Never give up believing that the God who spoke life into a valley of dry bones can still gather what is scattered, breathe into what is dead, and raise up what we thought was finished.
The apostle Paul puts it plainly, and these are the words I cling to whenever my heart asks “Why?”:
Ephesians 2:1 (KJV)
And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;
Ephesians 2:4-5 (KJV)
But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,
Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)
It’s like Paul was saying, we were the dry bones. God spoke. Life came.
As you worship today, listen carefully to the word of the Lord. Do not be ashamed to speak it. Do not remain silent when He says speak. Stand in faith and watch—because the same God who caused bone to come to bone still brings the dead to life. And who knows how soon He will come again.
Keep trusting. Keep speaking. The valley is not the end of the story.
Where in your life right now do things feel scattered or lifeless—and how might the words “But God” speak into that place?
Is there someone the Lord is prompting you to speak His word to, even if it feels unlikely they will respond?
Father, thank You that You are the God who speaks life into dry bones. Where we see only death and distance, You see the possibility of resurrection. Breathe Your Spirit afresh upon us. Give us courage to open our mouths when You call us to speak, and faith to keep watching for what only You can do. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
