It is our sad duty to inform you of the death of Reverend Monsignor Richard J. Lyons, JCL, a retired priest of the diocese and Judicial Vicar Emeritus. He died on February 25, 2026. He was 78 years old.

Msgr. Lyons was born in Red Bank, NJ, and attended Seton Hall University and Immaculate Conception Seminary, Darlington. He was ordained to the priesthood for the Diocese of Trenton on May 18, 1974. He served at Immaculate Conception Parish, Somerville, Sacred Heart Parish, South Plainfield, and St. Matthew Parish, Edison. In 1986, he was named Administrator of St. John the Evangelist Parish, Dunellen, becoming Pastor in 1989 and serving there until 2008. After the formation of the Metuchen Diocese, he was asked to pursue a License in Canon Law to establish a diocesan Tribunal. Monsignor served as Associate Judicial Vicar of the Tribunal for 15 years before becoming Judicial Vicar in 2001. In 2016, he was named a Chaplain to His Holiness by Pope Francis. He retired from active ministry in 2020.

Msgr. Lyon’s body will be received by Rev. Msgr. John Fell on Monday, March 2, 2026 at 2:00 p.m. at St. John the Evangelist Church, 317 First Street, Dunellen, with public visitation to follow until 4:45pm. Very Rev. Robert Kolakowski, Judicial Vicar, will preside at the Mass of Commemoration at 5:00 p.m. and Rev. Sean Winters will be the homilist. Most Rev. Paul G. Bootkoski, Bishop Emeritus, will celebrate the Mass of Christian Burial on Tuesday, March 3, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. at St. John’s, and Rev. Brian Nolan will be the homilist. Interment will be at Resurrection Cemetery, Piscataway.

Let us be joined in prayer that Msgr. Lyons will find the fulfillment of his faith and the reward of his priestly labors in the presence of the Risen Lord. May our prayerful support be a source of comfort to his family. May he rest in peace.

We are pleased to announce that we will have Eucharistic Service tomorrow, Wednesday, January 28. The severe weather has passed and our regular schedule resumes.

We do encourage everyone to use caution when traveling, and be mindful of any remaining icy patches on the local sidewalks.

Severe Weather: Due to ongoing icy road and sidewalk conditions, the Eucharistic service for Tuesday, January 27, has been canceled. We anticipate resuming our regular schedule on Wednesday, weather permitting. Please see the parish website for updates.

Debido a la gravedad de las condiciones meteorológicas previstas, se ha concedido una dispensa de la obligación de asistir a misa dominical para el fin de semana del 24 y 25 de enero de 2026. Recuerden que nadie está obligado a asistir si el desplazamiento supone un riesgo para su seguridad.

Severe Weather: Due to the severity of the expected weather, a dispensation has been granted from the obligation to attend Sunday Mass for the weekend of January 24 and 25, 2026. Please remember that no one is bound by this obligation if traveling poses a risk to their safety.

Sunday Mass Schedule (January 25): Mass will be celebrated at 8:30 AM, 10:30 AM, and 12:00 PM for those who can travel safely.

Home Worship Resources: Those unable to attend in person are encouraged to sanctify the Lord’s Day through prayer, reading the Scriptures, or participating in a televised or live-streamed Mass. In these circumstances, you are invited to make an Act of Spiritual Communion.

Monday Schedule Update: Please note that the Weekday Mass / Eucharistic service for Monday, January 26, is canceled due to inclement weather.

Those who can travel safely are strongly encouraged to consider attending the Saturday Vigil Mass at 5:00 PM.

Those unable to attend in person are encouraged to sanctify the Lord’s Day through prayer, reading the Scriptures, or participating in a televised or live-streamed Mass and making a Spiritual Communion.

During Lent, Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament will be from 8:30 am until 6:50 pm (in the Chapel ).

There will be not be First Friday 7:00 - 9:00 PM Adoration (as we do during other liturgical seasons). Instead we will have Stations of the Cross in the church at 6:15 (Spanish) and 7:00 PM (English).
