We need a minimum of 10 names by Monday:
Although 9/11 has passed, we are still supporting several service projects in the stake. One that we consider particularly important is in Duncanville because of the interfaith aspect. We are thrilled to be included. The dates are 9/23, 9/24. 9/30, and 10/1.
Betty Dunn of First Methodist Church is the coordinator. I spoke to her this morning for additional details. They have vetted 16 applications and chosen 9 properties. This is what she shared:
1. Two of the houses only need tree removal so volunteers will not be involved.
2. Three of the houses will be completed by single church groups, so we will not be working on those.
3. Of the four remaining properties, volunteers from the other churches will be spread between them. The work will consist of clearing some brush, removing and replacing rotted wood on the houses, and painting the new wood. She noted that this is different than usual because there is often fence repair and other landscaping needed.
This is what is needed from us:
1. By Monday, 9/19, she would like to have the names of our volunteers. We would like to plan for 10. Men, women, and youth over 11 with parents can help. She hopes to have T-shirts and would like to have them to me before next Monday, the 23rd, so sizes would be really helpful. She would like to know of any particular skills or interests to assist in decisions where to place people.
2. We will be divided between the four properties (hence the need for names and skills). Each will have its own project manager. Each will be worked on for all four days.
3. We do not have to commit to having 10 people on each of the four days or for all day even. Lunch is provided as are port-a-potties. We can go once or we can be spread out. They just need to know who, how many, and what date people will be there.
4. We do not need to provide tools but may if we prefer. All materials are provided for the projects.
* October 1 is the first day of General Conference, so we can skip that as a group. Individuals may want to participate and record conference, but I don't think we should ask for volunteers that day.
*We still need to finish Ms. Cole's house, and I am aware that service burnout is a concern. We can ask for help from other wards, from friends and neighbors, but I believe our work on this community project is important in bringing awareness of the church to those others involved.
*It is possible that we can have our own property in the spring or fall of next year, if things go well.
*We will not be given addresses in advance. Mrs. Dunn is protective of the property owners' privacy, and I agree with her decision. However, she will provide pictures of what there is to do, perhaps as early as this afternoon.
Thank you so much for your consideration and assistance. I personally can participate on September 23 and 24.
