The Nine Small Crosses

The nine crosslets (tiny crosses) represent the nine original dioceses that gathered in 1789 to form the Protestant Episcopal Church in the United States. They symbolize the church’s founding and unity.

The original dioceses were:

1. Connecticut
2. New York
3. New Jersey
4. Pennsylvania
5. Delaware
6. Maryland
7. Virginia
8. South Carolina
9. Massachusetts

The Colors

Red

* Represents sacrifice, courage, and the blood of Christ.
* The large red cross is the Cross of St. George, reflecting the Church of England heritage from which the Episcopal Church emerged.

White

* Represents purity, holiness, resurrection, and light.

Blue

* The blue canton (upper left corner) echoes the color of the American flag.
* It signifies the Episcopal Church’s American identity after independence from England.

Why the Nine Crosses Are Arranged in an X

The nine small crosses are arranged in the shape of a St. Andrew’s Cross (a diagonal X). St. Andrew is the patron saint of Scotland, honoring the influence of the Scottish Episcopal Church, whose bishops helped secure apostolic succession for the newly formed American church after the Revolution.

So the shield tells a story:

* St. George’s Cross = English roots
* Blue field = American church
* Nine crosses = nine founding dioceses
* St. Andrew’s Cross pattern = Scottish Episcopal influence and apostolic succession
