Marilyn’s Musing - June 2, 2026
Let’s start this week off with the first line of the hymn we sang on Sunday – “We are one in the Spirit; we are one in the Lord”. I was humming that song on the way home from church and then, of course, looked up the history of it when I got home.
"They'll Know We Are Christians" (also known as "They'll Know We Are Christians by Our Love" or "We Are One in the Spirit") is a Christian hymn written in the 1960s by Catholic priest Fr. Peter Scholtes. I am copying from Wikipedia the history of this hymn. The title of the song may originate from John 13:35: "By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another", Young's Literal Translation (YLT), or from a phrase that non-believers used to describe Christian’s believers of early Church: "Behold, how they love one another". We can also refer to Ephesians 4:4-6 that states: "There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all."
The 3rd verse is a great way for the volunteers to start this week off that work in the Thrift Shoppe as we get ready for a busy sale this weekend. “We will work with each other; we will work side by side”. Then we go to the chorus and sing “And they’ll know we are Christian’s by our love, by our love; yes, they’ll know we are Christian’s by our love”.
I am sitting here on this beautiful summer morning just being thankful. You may ask “being thankful for what?” I was driving to the church this morning to finish getting things ready for the sale this weekend. As I was driving along thinking of nothing just enjoying feeling good and being happy and all of a sudden, I found myself saying “Thank You God”. The words came to my mind and were said out loud before I knew it. Did that ever happen to you? Did you ever find yourself just saying “thank you, God”. I love it when it happens to me because I know God is talking to me. Was I saying “thank you” for the Thrift Shoppe and being part of it? Was I saying thank you to the women who work with me to take care of others as part of the mission of Old North Reformed Church? I was just simply thankful for everything.
The month of June is starting off with beautiful, summer weather. (although it is going to be very warm this weekend) Here is a fun poem about the beginning of June written by Catherine Pulsider I’d like to share with you.

Summer Blooms
June arrives and summer starts to bloom,
Vacations begin, free from classroom gloom.
Beaches, barbecues, and outdoor fun,
The season has only just begun.

Run free through fields of lush, green grass,
Soak up the sun until it's time to pass.
With June here, let the joyous times roll,
Excitement in the air—summer's on a roll!

Let’s continue the week with “Excitement in the air” – the Thrift Shoppe is having their last sale of the season and it will be amazing!!! But even more amazing is when you have a quiet moment and all of a sudden, you realize that God is talking to you!! (just take a breath and listen and He will be there)

Marilyn’s Musing - May 26, 2026
“Happy Birthday” to the church that is over 2,000 years old and “Happy Memorial Day” to our soldiers who died so we can be free. We had a wonderful service in church celebrating our church's birthday with fun hats, balloons and a birthday cake. We also remembered our soldiers and names were read in remembrance. When we left the service, we were asked to take a little green soldier with a list of names of soldiers serving today so we can remember them in our prayers.
Can you imagine the church being over 2,000 years old? I sit in “my” pew at Old North and sometimes wonder who sat there before me? I call it “my” pew because I sat there with my mother every Sunday until she passed away and my kids sat with us. I enjoy singing the old favorite hymns that I know she loved. One of them being “Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory” that we sang on Sunday. As I have said before, I don’t have one of the best singing voices, so I will apologize if sometimes I get a little loud with my favorites to my church family sitting around me, but by now they understand it just happens. But who has sat in this pew before me? Was it a soldier heading off to war? Was it a mother worrying about her son as he marched past the church heading to Camp Merritt? Was it the husband or son that came home from war and gave thanks to God he was able to sit in the pew and worship Him? I’ll never know. All I know is that I will continue to sit in that pew as long as I can and worship God to the best of my ability and carry on the worshipping that people have done generations before me. I hope someone takes care of that pew when I am no longer there. It’s a nice thought that I will be in heaven (where God doesn’t mind my singing voice) and I can look down and see who is there praising God as I do.
For those who were at the service or watched it online, that was me doing the scripture reading. I really enjoyed that story in Acts about Pentecost. I will also admit I had been practicing reading that scripture lesson all week. Pastor was kind enough to send me the pronunciation of the words so I could figure out how to say them. It was a challenge but I think I did pretty well. I enjoy reading scripture as part of worshiping in church. I am sure you see that I sign up almost once a month. I also try to guess what Pastor Debbie will be teaching us with the reading. Somehow, she ties it all together with the hymns and her lesson. Anyone who is hesitant about reading, don’t be. It feels good to do it and when I look up during my reading I see my church family. No one has said anything good or bad about it, they just listen. Remember we are all together worshiping God. It’s that easy.
Talking about Acts 2 1-13 – it was very interesting. Can you imagine all these people speaking in different languages but, yet, they were understood!!!!! This was so all people could hear God’s message no matter what country they lived in or what language they spoke. This is what Pentecost is and it marks the beginning of the Christian Church. The ability to speak in different languages enabled the apostles to communicate with people from various regions and spread the message of Jesus to a wider audience. It also symbolizes how Christians can worship together no matter their culture or language. This opened up the whole world to the disciples.
Let’s sing a hymn in the National Life section of our hymnbook titled “O God of Every Nation”. The bible reading for this hymn is “May the peoples praise you, O God, may all the peoples praise you” PS 67:”

Marilyn’s Musing - May 19, 2026
“God Bless America” I’d like to dedicate my musing this week to all the men and women who fought and died during the wars we have fought in our country. Memorial Day is Monday, May25th this year. What do you do on Memorial Day to remember our soldiers?
On Sunday we will have a reading done of the list of soldiers in our church family who fought bravely and didn’t come home. I added my great-uncle's name who was a chaplain in one of the wars and returned home to be a Pastor for a church in Ridgefield Park, NJ. Now, comes the embarrassing part – I don’t remember anything else about him. His name was Reverend Alan MacNeil and he was my grandfather’s brother on my mother’s side. I think you all know me well enough to know I am going to find out what I can about him. He is buried in the family plot where my parents are buried in South Hackensack. With the request from Pastor Debbie to send in names of family members to be remembered, it came to my mind that I don’t have anything to remember about him, except his name. I wasn’t alive when he was and there is no one left in my family except for myself and my sister. I don’t want him forgotten so, thank you Pastor Debbie, for having these soldiers remembered because now he will be.
Earlier in my musing I asked what do you do on Memorial Day to remember our soldiers? I know my answer will be to go to church and hear their names read and sing patriotic songs (I hope). I might even take a ride to the cemetery on Monday to pay my respects.
I would like to share a poem with you that I have shared before.
A Soldier's Sacrifice
He fought for freedom, a warrior so brave,
He fought through the day, his spirit to save
He fought through the night, with courage untold,
In the story of honor, his tale unfolds.

He gave his all, in the field of strife,
His dedication cut through, like a sharpened knife.
His very best, in the face of the test
In the echoes of battle, where memories persist,
A soldier’s sacrifice, in the annals, exists.
His life laid down, a poignant display,
For Freedom’s cause, he found his way.

In the hallowed ground, where heroes rest,
His legacy lives on, forever blessed.
A soldier’s sacrifice, engraved in history,
In the embrace of valor, he found his victory.

As we all get together and celebrate Memorial Day, however we do – before we take the first bite of that hotdog or hamburger – say a quick thank you to the men and women who died so we could be here today.
