Church Family,
I'm sure you have seen the many headlines pertaining to the recent gathering of the Southern Baptist Convention in Orlando, Florida.
Much of the attention has been given to the issue of women in ministry, specifically in regard to the amendment to the SBC Constitution which limits fellowship in the convention to churches who only call men to be pastors and preachers.
To be clear, this has been the official position of the SBC since 2000 when "The Baptist Faith and Message" (our statement of faith) was amended to specify the office of pastor as "limited to men as qualified by Scripture." Before that, this was the position of conservative baptists going back to the 17th century. Furthermore, this was and is the position of Orthodox and Catholic traditions going back centuries.
First Baptist Church Dumas is a happy member of the Southern Baptist Convention on a national level, and the Southern Baptists of Texas Convention on the state level. We whole-heartedly subscribe to the "Baptist Faith and Message (2000)," including the view that the office of pastor/ elder/ overseer is "limited to men as qualified by Scripture." This is not a cultural or political position, but one rooted in the clear commands of Scripture, namely Ephesians 5:22-33; 1 Timothy 2:8-15; 3:1-7; Titus 1:5-9; 1 Corinthians 14:33-35.
If we want to be faithful to Scripture, and to the picture of the Gospel intended in marriage and the family, we must model this in the local church.
It should be noted that this is specifically about the office and function of "pastor," and not a prohibition of women in all areas of ministry and leadership as it is being portrayed. Women are indeed called, gifted, and anointed by God in many areas of witness, missions, and ministry. That has never been the question.
I would encourage you to listen to the two messages below as they address this issue and represent the official position of our church and and pastors. One is a sermon from 1 Timothy 2 from 2022. The other is a Wednesday night study from 2021.
