Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church exists to:

-Glorify God in all we say, think and do. (1 Corinthians 10:31)
-Grow in our faith, knowledge, and understanding of our Lord Jesus Christ through the use of the Word and the Sacraments. (2 Peter 3:18)
-Go to our community, especially to the unchurched, with the gospel of Christ crucified. (Matthew 28:19-20)

When danger strikes, most people instinctively move away from it. Fire, violence, accidents, and disasters trigger a natural desire to find protection and safety. Yet first responders do the opposite. Firefighters, police officers, and paramedics run toward the very scenes others are fleeing. They enter burning buildings, approach violent situations, and kneel beside the injured in chaotic moments. This response is unexpected because it goes against basic human instinct.

Today God calls us to be spiritual first responders when we see people in trouble because of sin. Instead of self-preservation and comfort, we choose service to them and to our Lord. Our motive is the grace of God and his desire for the salvation of all mankind.

Some churches teach that if a person follows God, God responds by granting prosperity and peace, as would only be expected. That is nonsense. The Bible explains that if we are part of the Church of God, we will bear crosses. Believers suffer in this world, sometimes just because they are believers.
Why bother? We carry our crosses in gratitude for Jesus carrying his cross—one too heavy for us because it was weighted down with our sin. We carry our crosses because we know that in those moments of struggle, we are forced to turn to Christ and rely on his strength. This is the unexpected path, the one Jesus himself walked: the cross comes before the crown.

22 months.
That's how long our church was in a vacancy while we waited for our next fulltime pastor. And that's how long we continued to experience the goodness of God!

We had baptisms. We had marriages. We welcomed new members. Services continued. Events took place. VBS thrived. People stepped up. They filled needs and took on roles they hadn't done previously. We were served by a vacancy the entire time. And a multitude of guest pastors.

And above all, we saw that God always has a plan and that His timing is always perfect.

Day 3 of VBS was PRECIOUS!
It has been such a joy to share the love of Jesus with these precious children! Huge thanks to their parents who brought them and to our volunteers who led them. We've all made beautiful memories this week!

(and those highland cows that were made during craft time are quite precious, too!)

Please join us again this evening for our Summer Celebration Night! We'll kick things off at 6:00 in the church sanctuary with a brief closing message (led by our new pastor!) and the VBS kids will perform the song they've been learning. Then we'll head outside for some grilled burgers/hot dogs, bounce houses, facepainting, and lots of other family fun! See you there!

Full of kids, full of volunteers, full of energy, full of fun, full of learning, and full of praising.
