Halloween Hoe Down & Trunk-or-Treat

Saddle up for a spooktacular good time! Join us on October 30 from 6:00-8:00 PM for our Annual Halloween Hoe Down and Trunk-or-Treat — an evening packed with carnival games, friendly competition, and safe trick-or-treating for the whole family. Come in your best costume, try your luck at the games, and fill up your candy bag as you make your way through our trunk-or-treat lineup. Fun, food, and Halloween cheer await — see you there!

As with each Rosary session we do, we started this morning’s 7:00am gathering with special intentions we want to pray for. We could not have imagined what the Good Lord had in store for us today.

After breakfast we had a presentation from Animo, an organization affiliated with Porch working to rescue locals from addiction. Below you see a presentation from Victor, who was blind and close to death before being rescued by this true life-saving group.

Everyone is enjoying our 7am morning Rosary sessions on the 4th floor to start our day right, with Craig Johnston doing a wonderful job leading us through the Spiritual Rosary prayers.

Following another delicious Porch breakfast and reflections on the previous day’s work with Greg and Rachael, we set off to Maria Mercedes home site, blessed by the Lord with one more day of great weather for our work.

In mid-afternoon, we had the opportunity to visit the children from the orphanage in a large gym facility (with soccer goals and basketball hoops) which was perfect for the soccer balls and basketballs we brought along.

After about 30 minutes covering every square inch of the facility we had a clown come in, which the children absolutely loved.

Of course, we had to have a piñata as well, which did not last long with 30 kids poised to gather up the candy.

We ended with a snack for the kids, and following two hours of many hugs and new bonds with the children, our hearts were tugged when it came time for them to board the bus back to the orphanage.

The rain finally came down as we headed to a nice dinner with music at El Bistro. We hope that we’ll be able to continue work at the house on Thursday.

Our preschoolers had some very special visitors this morning! The Johns Creek Fire Department stopped by with their big red truck, and the kids loved exploring it, seeing the gear up close, learning about fire safety, and meeting real-life heroes. Thank you to the crew for making this a morning our little ones won't forget, and for all you do to keep our community safe!

We had another great start to Tuesday gathering for a spiritual Rosary on the 4th floor. We followed that with a hearty breakfast at the Hotel California to give us the energy for another full day on the worksite. Once again, the Lord blessed us with a full day without rain!

I forgot to mention something from yesterday that I never thought I’d be doing on a mission trip—we had to move a chicken coop to make room for the 1000+ cinder blocks we moved down to the job site. I think the chickens were sorry that their view was not as nice as before.

GUATEMALA MISSION TRIP DAY 3
We started the day with all of us meeting on the 4th floor for a Spiritual Rosary. After a great breakfast and meeting Noe, Hilda and the rest of the Porch de Salomon team, we were off today to meet the wonderful family we are building the home for. Maria is a lovely 29-year old woman who was abused and nearly beaten to death by her husband before leaving him. She has two children, David (7 years old) and Alvaro (4 years old) who were initially shy. Maria’s mother who lives next door to Maria was with her and donated the land for her house. The Lord was very good to us and gave us a wonderful day with no rain during our work day. We are starting the house and beginning with the digging to lay the foundation. Maria and her mother helped clear the dirt from the job site. Little Alvaro even pitched in before the boys totally opened up, playing with a set of toy cars and football Jeff brought along for the boys. After the standard work day lunch, we were consumed with offloading an enormous pile of cinder blocks from the delivery truck, and transporting 1,000+ cinder blocks 100 yards from the road to the house build site.It was a great day overall and such a joy to see the broad smiles on the faces of Maria, David and Alvaro. We can’t wait to see them again tomorrow and start the second day of our house build.

Blessing of the Animals

In honor of the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, patron saint of animals and ecology, parishioners gathered with their beloved pets on Sunday, October 4, at 2:00 PM for our annual Blessing of the Animals. Dogs, cats, and companions of every shape and size joined their families as Deacon Jamie and Father Avery offered a blessing over each one, giving thanks for the joy, loyalty, and love these creatures bring into our lives. St. Francis saw all of creation as a reflection of God's goodness, calling the animals his brothers and sisters, and it was a delight to celebrate that same spirit together as a parish family. Thank you to everyone who came out, and to all our four-legged (and feathered, and finned!) friends for being such good sports!

GUATEMALA MISSION TRIP

We arrived in Guatemala City around noon on Saturday, October 3rd to a rainy day that made the drive to Panajachel even longer than last year, if that was even possible…we arrived at Hotel California at 6:45pm, just in time for dinner and music with everyone still in great spirits.

Our Mass started early at 7am on Sunday morning, and we had the luck of being there at St Francis Church on the 800th anniversary of St. Francis’ death. The church decorations were unbelievable and the Mass was absolutely beautiful.
The entire town of Panajachel was in festival mode throughout the weekend with fireworks going off around the clock (yes, even at 5am in the morning). In spite of the light rain, there were processions in the streets on Sunday afternoon with wonderfully decorated statues like the one above being paraded around.

Of course, we enjoyed the fantastic brunch at Hotel Atitlan by the lake with its beautiful floral gardens. We followed that with a trip to the waterfall which came crashing down with tremendous intensity due to the rainfall over the past 24 hours.

Thankfully, the rainfall stopped in the early afternoon, giving us a chance to explore the city a little on our “acclimation day”. Following a very nice devotional session with Greg, Rachael and several of the local residents, we enjoyed a hearty dinner at Guajimbo’s.

Several of us visited the ongoing festivities on the church plaza later in the evening with enormous crowds, a live band and even more fireworks. The entire city seems to have been at one of the Masses throughout the morning followed by the round-the-clock festivities.

We’re looking forward to meeting our family tomorrow morning and starting work on the house.
