In loving memory of Sister Theresa Rolling (1931–2026)

Sister Theresa Rolling, OSF, grew up in a faith-filled farm family of 15 children and felt called to religious life at a young age. She entered the Sisters of St. Francis in 1949 and began a lifelong ministry of service.

Theresa taught in Iowa schools for many years while earning her degree, later moving into parish ministry, retreat work, and service roles across Iowa, Nebraska, and Minnesota. Whether teaching, ministering in parishes, caring for others, or supporting retreat ministries, she followed God’s call with quiet dedication.

Through every season of her life, Sister Theresa remained deeply committed to doing God’s will and living the Franciscan mission. Her complete obituary can be read here: https://osfdbq.org/sister-theresa-rolling-osf/.

Alleluia! Christ is risen!

On this joyful Easter Sunday, we celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus Christ and the promise of new life for all creation.

In the spirit of Saint Francis of Assisi, we rejoice in the beauty of renewal, hope, and the light that overcomes every darkness.

May the peace of the risen Christ fill your heart and home today, and may the joy of Easter inspire us to be bearers of hope in our world.

Alleluia, Alleluia!

On this Good Friday, we stand at the foot of the Cross in prayer and quiet remembrance.

In the suffering of Jesus Christ, we see a love poured out completely for the life of the world. As Saint Francis of Assisi reminded us, it is in embracing humility, sacrifice, and compassion that we draw closest to God.

Today, we pause. We reflect. We pray.

May this sacred day open our hearts to deeper compassion for all who suffer, and may we be instruments of peace and mercy in a world in need of hope.

"The Lord Jesus, when he had eaten with his disciples, poured water into a basin and began to wash their feet saying: This example I leave you. If I your Lord and Teacher have washed your feet, then surely you must wash one another’s feet."— From the Holy Thursday Liturgy.

The Dubuque Franciscans are intentional about sharing the Franciscan spirit. One way in which this is done is through inviting people to participate in Franciscan Way of Life (FWL). Franciscan Way of Life is a two-year process which invites participants to a deeper understanding of Franciscan values and charism. After a meaningful weekend at Mount St. Francis Center, a FWL participant reflected:

"The FWL group from Ames, IA, visited Mt. St. Francis Center the weekend of March 20-21. We were inspired by the history and world-wide mission stories shared by Srs. Eileen Miller and Nancy Meyerhofer. We were able to have dinner with our prayer sister, Sr. Lila Hellman, and learned about the many sustainable efforts the sisters are doing from Sr. Marie Cigrand. Sr. Mary Lechtenberg brought us up to date on the efforts of a group working to stop human trafficking. Everywhere we went, we were greeted with welcoming sisters and staff. We were also so touched by the love and care the sisters show for each other. It was a wonderful experience."

In loving memory of Sister Lene Rubly (1935–2026)

Sister Lene Rubly, OSF, died peacefully on March 23, 2026, at the age of 90.

Sister Lene Rubly was born in Petersburg, Iowa, and raised on a farm where she developed a love for hard work, the outdoors, and softball. She entered the Sisters of St. Francis in 1953 with her sister Ann and devoted her life to ministry.

After 22 years of teaching, Lene served in parish ministry across Iowa, Georgia, and Kentucky, later earning her master’s degree in Pastoral Studies. Known for her dedication, she traveled thousands of miles each year to serve her parish communities.

In retirement, she continued to inspire, describing herself as a “midwife,” helping bring the future of the Church to life through her service. Her complete obituary can be read here: https://osfdbq.org/sister-lene-rubly-osf/

Water decisions affect everyone—but not everyone gets a seat at the table.

Around 14% of countries still lack mechanisms to ensure women can participate equally in water-related decision-making and management (UNEP-DHI / Global Water Partnership / UN Women, 2025).

When women are excluded from water governance, communities miss out on their insight, leadership, and solutions—solutions that could improve access, equity, and sustainability.

Empowering women in water leadership isn’t just fair—it strengthens entire communities.

Every day, 1,000 children under five die from unsafe water, sanitation, and hygiene.

This heartbreaking reality affects families around the world, highlighting that access to clean water is not just a necessity—it’s a lifesaving human right (World Health Organization, 2023).

Clean water saves lives, protects health, and gives children the chance to grow, learn, and thrive.

Join us in supporting initiatives that bring safe water to communities in need. Together, we can help turn the tide.

250 million hours. Every single day.

In 53 countries with available data, women and girls spend a staggering 250 million hours each day collecting water—more than three times the amount of time spent by men and boys (UN Women / United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, 2024).

That’s time that could be spent in school, earning income, caring for family, or simply resting.

Access to clean water isn’t just about convenience—it’s about equity, opportunity, and dignity.

Imagine what could happen if those hours were given back.
