THE “WHEN”
(WE GATHER)

LET US PREPARE TO WORSHIP THE LORD, OUR GOD!
Welcome
Announcements
Ringing of the Bell
Prelude
Silent meditations, personal prayers

Leader: As individuals holding faith in Christ Jesus, and corporately as the St. Peter’s United Church of Christ family, we genuinely declare, without exception, our belief that…
People: “No matter who you are, or where you are on life’s journey, YOU are WELCOME here!” We thank Jesus for He has reminded us that “God is still speaking.”

Gathering Song: “Roll is called up Yonder”

When the trumpet of the Lord shall sound
And time shall be no more
And the morning breaks, eternal, bright and fair
When the saves of earth shall gather
Over on the other shore
And the roll is called up yonder, I’ll be there

Chorus:
When the roll is called up yonder
When the roll is called up yonder
When the roll is called up yonder
When the roll is called up yonder, I’ll be there

On the bright and cloudless morning
When the dead in Christ shall rise
And the glory of His resurrection share
When His chosen ones are gathered
To their home beyond the sky
And the roll is called up yonder, I’ll be there
Chorus

Let us labor for the Master
From the dawn till setting sun
Let us talk of all His wondrous love and care
Then when all of life is over
And our work on earth is done
And the roll is called up yonder, I’ll be there
Chorus x 2

When the roll is called up yonder,
When the roll is called up yonder, I’ll be there.

Call to Worship
Leader: We arrive fully into this moment, Holy One. We open to sense your presence among us.
We hear you say,
People: “This moment is sacred.”

Leader: We need you, Jesus, to help us. We come to you as your first disciples did. We hear you say,
People: “This moment is sacred”

Leader: Spirit of Divine Love, come to us with your healing waters. We hear you say,
People: “This moment is sacred.”

Leader: Let us worship God!
(Those who are able, please stand.)

*Worship Hymn #337 “Praise to the Lord”
(Please be seated.)

Prayer of Preparation
Leader: I invite us to a few moments of silence. Feel your rhythms slow a bit. Now, I invite you to simply hold the prayer beads in your hands. Begin to set your attention on the sacred nature of the Holy.
Take a deep breath. Sacredness permeates this world. We are surrounded by so many people and plants, creatures and landscapes that reveal Divine glory. Our hearts overflow with awe, wonder, and praise. Hallowed be. Let us worship God, follow Christ, and revel in the Spirit of Praise in this place.
People: Amen.

Call to Confession (Gen. 18:9–15; 21:1)
Leader: The mystery of God brings the promise of life, but we doubt the Spirit’s power to overcome death. The resurrection of Jesus Christ, the Son, reveals that nothing is impossible with God. Let us confess our sin and receive new life.
(Take time now for your own Silent prayers of confession.)

Our Prayer of Confession (Gen. 18:1–8, Rom. 5:3–5)
Leader: Triune God, Holy Three, Holy One, we confess that we do not know how to look for you. We do not sense your nearness, and if there are angels among us, we are unaware.
People: We do not show the hospitality to strangers that Abraham showed to you.

Leader: We do not trust that our hardships can be transformed by your Spirit. O Covenant-keeper, forgive us.
People: Let us laugh with joy because your grace has made peace among us.

Leader: Send us out with this good news so that others will also receive your blessing; through Jesus Christ, our Lord.
People: Amen.

Assurance of Pardon (Rom. 5:1, 9)
Pastor: Christ gave his life to save us from the wrath of God. Therefore, since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Trust the good news of the gospel: in Jesus Christ our sins are forgiven.
People: Thanks be to God.

Choral Response to God’s Gift of Forgiveness
You know my words before they’re said.
You know my need and I am fed.
You give me life.
You know my ways, my strength, my path, for all my days.
my strength, my path, for all my day
If I should fly, beyond the dawn,
the darkness will not overcome.
If I lie down in deepest night,
still you are there, my Lord my light.
Still you are there, my Lord my light.

(Those who are able, please stand.)
*Hymn #142 The Gloria Patri:
People: Glory Be to the Father, and to the Son,
And to the Holy Ghost.
As it was in the beginning,
Is now and ever shall be.
World without end, Amen, Amen

*Passing Of the Peace
(Those who are able, remain standing and offer each other the Sign of Peace.)
“Peace Be With You” Christopher Grundy
*People: Peace be with you, peace be with you,
Peace be with you now, God’s peace to you.
Peace behind you, peace before you,
Peace be all around, in Jesus Christ.

Prayer of Intercession (Matt. 10:1–8)
Pastor: From you alone, Lord Jesus Christ, comes the authority to heal the sick, cast out demons, welcome the outcast, and even raise the dead. Therefore, we are bold to seek your power and ready to claim your grace. Heal the sick.

Pastor: Cast out demons.
People: Banish the powers that oppress your people; bring peace to troubled hearts and minds.

Pastor: Let these signs of your coming realm be manifest in our world today; for you are our Lord and Savior who taught his disciples to pray... Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on Earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. The Prayer of Praise
Gratitude has many benefits. Offering “praise” prayers can help us get more specific as we name things and people and circumstances for which we are grateful. When we say “hallowed be...” we are setting something apart as sacred, special and worthy of praise. See what happens when you also praise God for circumstances/people that are difficult.

Is in this Place”
Surely the presence of the Lord is in this place,
I can feel His mighty power and His Grace.
I can hear the brush of angel's wings,
I see glory on each face.
Surely the presence of the Lord is in this place.

Surely the spirit of the Lord is here in love, and it brings God's peace as quiet as a dove.
I can see the glow of angel's wings
shining brightly from above.
Surely the spirit of the Lord is here in love.

Surely the blessing of the Lord is in my heart,

and I know How Great Thou Art.
Surely the blessing of the Lord is in my heart.

Prayers of the People
Sharing of the Community Joys & Concerns
Pastor: We are doing “bidding prayers” in our worship for this series. This is where we lift up joys and concerns so that we fill this sanctuary with our prayers. Each prayer is a sign that we believe God is present and working among us. We are going to share our joys and concerns to bring them top-of-mind and then we will pray with our beads.
What are you thankful for today? We are going to lift up words or phrases of thanksgiving. What are you grateful for?
What concerns you today? Who needs our prayers? Who else needs our prayers?
Individual Silent Prayer

Prayer of Intercession
Pastor: Like each bead on our prayer strands, each prayer is precious to the Holy One, even and especially the ones we cannot speak, but keep close in our hearts. For all these things spoken and the ones spoken in the quiet of our hearts, hear our prayers,
O God.

God of all goodness, we give thanks for the newness you give each of us every day. We thank you for your surprises, for the people you put in our paths to show us new dimensions of your faithfulness.
People: Lord, listen to your children praying,

Pastor: We give you thanks for all people of faith, for churches everywhere, for the differing insights into your will offered and proclaimed by many teachers to guide and refresh your people.
People: Lord, listen to your children praying,

Pastor: We thank you for all nations, for racial and ethnic differences, for the variety of languages, foods, and lands you have created. Mold us into people who praise you for the marvels you set before us. Help us not to fear distinctions but to embrace them as your gifts.
People: Lord, listen to your children praying,

Pastor: Soften us, Lord, so that we are able to enter into others’ pain. When we are healthy, make us grateful. When we are in need, help us to receive the care of others.
People: Lord, listen to your children praying,

Pastor: We pray for those who suffer: for those who have no home, for all who lack enough food, for people who have no work or work that is not life-giving, for all who live in fear, and for all who hunger for peace and do not know where to turn.
People: Lord, listen to your children praying,

Pastor: Make us whole so that we journey with complete faith. Into your hands we commend all who need our prayers, trusting in your compassion, through Christ Jesus, our Savior and Lord who taught his disciples to pray...Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on Earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

THE “WHAT”
(WE PROCLAIM)
“THE WORD OF GOD, FOR THE PEOPLE OF GOD”
Prayer for Illumination
Pastor: May your word fall into our hearts this day, O God, as breath comes into dust, as water feeds rivers and fields, rich with healing, abundant, alive, and true.
People: Amen.

The Reading of Scripture
Romans 8:15-17 NT (Pg. 1742 in the pew Bible)

Pastor: This is the Word of the Lord
People: Thanks be to God

(Please note: All are welcome as St. Peter’s practices an open communion table.)
Words of Invitation
Pastor: Let us join together in the name of Jesus the Christ to commune as one. Come to this sacred table, not because you must, but because you may. This table is open to all who confess Jesus as the Christ and seek to follow Christ’s way. The gifts of God for the people of God. Come now for all things are ready.

People: It is right, and a good and joyful thing,
always and everywhere to give thanks to you.

Communion Prayer
Pastor: Let us pray.
By your Spirit make us one with Christ, one with each other, and one in ministry to all the world, until Christ comes in final victory and we feast at his heavenly banquet. And so we ask you, God to pour out your Holy Spirit on us gathered here, and on these gifts of bread and wine. Make them be for us the body and blood of Christ, so that we may be for the world the body of Christ, redeemed by his blood. Through your Son Jesus Christ with the Holy Spirit in your holy church, all honor and glory is yours, almighty God, now and forever.
People: Amen.

Sharing the Elements
(Ushers, please come forward.)
Pastor: The Lord Jesus Christ, on the night of his arrest, took bread, and after giving thanks to God, broke it and said: "This is my body, which is broken for you; do this, remembering me.” In the same way, Jesus took the cup after supper, and said: "This cup is the new covenant sealed in my blood. Whenever you drink it, do this, remembering me."

Pastor: Ministering to you on his behalf, I offer you this bread.
(Ushers will distribute the Sacraments.)
(Congregation will hold the elements until all are served.)

Pastor: Take, eat, this is His body, broken for you.

Pastor: Ministering to you now in Christ’s name, I offer you this cup.
(Ushers will distribute the Sacraments.)
(Congregation will hold the elements until all are served.)
(Note: Center ring contains grape juice.)

Pastor: Take, drink, this is His love given for you.

Prayer of Thanksgiving
Pastor: Blessed are you, our Comfort. You have given Jesus, your only son, who was made lower than the angels, for our sake.
People: We thank you God for inviting us to this table where we have known the presence of Christ and have received all Christ’s gifts. Strengthen our faith, increase our love for one another, and let us show forth our praise for you in our lives through Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen
(Those who are able, please stand.)

*Closing Hymn # 500 “Abide With Me”

*Benediction and Charge:

If you used loaners (meaning you have some already at home and forgot to bring them), please leave the loaners here for next time.

And now hear this word of blessing and charge:
God knows our words before they’re said. knows our need and we are fed. God gives us life, knows our ways,
our strength, our path, for all our days.
our strength, our path, for all our days.
Go into the world with the assurance
that God goes with you, Jesus prays for you,
and the Spirit breathes through you, all your days.
Let the people say, Amen.

The Prayer of Presence
Knowing God through prayer can be a creative act. The Bible uses many names for God. Abba is just one of them. In this prayer, we repeat various names for God (just say the name, not the explanation or reference). As you pause between each one, imagine what knowing God in this way means for your developing relationship with the Divine.

Bead 1: Creator (we are also creative) Gen 1:1
Bead 2: Logos (“the Word” scripted in us) John 1:1
Bead 3: Mother (“as a hen gathers her chicks”) Matt 23:37
Bead 4: Alpha & Omega (always with us) Rev 1:8
Bead 5: Great Light (shining into our darkest places) Isa 9:2
Bead 6: Refuge (shelter in times of trouble) Ps 9:9
Bead 7: Gracious & Merciful (always loving) Jonah 4:2
End Bead: Abba (intimate and fully known) Romans 8:15-17

THE “WHEN“
(WE GATHER)

Gathering Song: “His Mercy is More”

What love could remember, no wrongs we have done
Omniscient all-knowing, He counts not their sum
Thrown into a sea, without bottom or shore
Our sins they are many, His mercy is more
Chorus:
Praise the Lord, His mercy is more
Stronger than darkness, new every morn
Our sins they are many, His mercy is more

What patience would wait, as we constantly roam
What Father so tender, is calling us home
He welcomes the weakest, the vilest, the poor
Our sins they are many, His mercy is more
Chorus:

What riches of kindness, He lavished on us
His blood was the payment, His life was the cost
We stood 'neath a debt, we could never afford
Our sins they are many, His mercy is more
Chorus:

Call to Worship (2 Cor. 13:13 )
Leader: The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, he love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with all of you.
People: Let us worship God!
(Those who are able, please stand.)

*Worship Hymn #439 “Sweet Hour of Prayer”
(Please be seated.)

Prayer of Preparation
Pastor: I invite us to a few moments of silence. Feel your rhythms slow a bit. You were given a strand of prayer beads when you arrived. Simply hold those in your hands. Feel the textures with no need to figure anything else out about them right now. Just “be still and know….” meaning, listen to whatever is in your heart. Take a deep breath. You are allowed to simply “be” in your life sometimes. “Be still” sometimes. Because when we do, we can finally hear what we know about the Holy Spirit deep inside of us. Let us worship God, follow Christ, and revel in the Spirit of Presence in this place.
People: Amen.

Our Prayer of Confession (“All My Days”)
Leader: You know my words before they’re said. You know my need and I am fed. You give me life. You know my ways, my strength, my path, for all my days.
People: my strength, my path, for all my days. Amen.
(Take time now for your own silent prayers of confession.)

Assurance of Pardon
Pastor: Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds. In Christ Jesus you are forgiven.
People: Thanks be to God.

Choral Response to God’s Gift of Forgiveness:
Rise up in us and we will rise
From death into a newfound life:
From bo***ge freed, from harm released,
From illness healed, as one in peace.
When all is lost our hearts are warmed,
Our hope restored, our lives transformed.
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!
(Those who are able, please stand.)

THE “WHERE”
(We Respond)
Prayers of the People
Sharing of the Community Joys & Concerns
Pastor: When we come to the prayer time in our worship, we have been in communication with God throughout the service, but this is the moment when we hear the Word from the scriptures, we hear a word from a guide, a leader, who helps us to explore our faith, and now we are ready to ask–“just ask”–for God’s Word to become flesh among us once again as we intercede on behalf of the world. When we bring joys and concerns in this moment, it serves to bring them predominantly into our minds and hearts so that our response to the Gospel Good News is to prepare to be that Good News through our actions in the world. This is the “where” of prayer. Prayer happens where we are “a-ware” of our need for loving relationship with God, with others, with ourselves. So we are going to share our joys and concerns to bring them top-of-mind.
What are you thankful for today? (Our Joys)
What concerns you today? Who needs our prayers? (Our Concerns)
Individual Silent Prayer

Prayer of Intercession (Gen. 1:28)
Pastor: In accord with God's command that we hold dominion over creation, let us pray for the church, the world, and all for whom we are called to be stewards, saying, “God of all goodness, hear our prayer.”

We give you thanks, O God, for our world, which you made and renewed in the power of Jesus' resurrection.
Make us wise and careful of your gifts as we live on Earth.
People: God of all goodness, hear our prayer.

Pastor: We pray that the love which passes ceaselessly
between the Father and the Son in the fellowship of the Holy Spirit may renew and deepen the life of each
Christian and draw us all into your unending life.
People: God of all goodness, hear our prayer.

Pastor: For the leaders of the church: for Protestants, Roman Catholics, and the Orthodox; for Sunday school children and youth; for the elderly whose wise counsel is sorely needed in all ages; and for all ecumenical endeavors that seek to bring us closer to each other and to you.
People: God of all goodness, hear our prayer.

Pastor: For Earth and all creatures and plants; for healthy water and air and soil; for policies and laws that regard our home in God's universe as a precious gift.
People: God of all goodness, hear our prayer.

Pastor: For our families, our households, and our communities, that your life together-Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—may show us the like importance of each of us, and so strengthen us in your grace and truth.
People: God of all goodness, hear our prayer.

Pastor: For the sick and those who suffer in any way;
for those who struggle to pay rent or a mortgage;
for those who have no home; for those who are neglected and abused in our communities; for people who long for family and are instead alone; for children who do not have a good guide to raise them up; and for whatever else you see that we need.
People: God of all goodness, hear our prayer.

Pastor: For all those needs still unnamed but placed before you now, either silently or aloud...
People: God of all goodness, hear our prayer.

Pastor: Into your hands we entrust all that is of concern this day, sure that you hear our pleas, grateful that your will be done on earth as in heaven.
We pray this in the name of the Savior, Jesus Christ,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
who taught his disciples to pray... Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on Earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

THE “WHAT”
(WE PROCLAIM)
“THE WORD OF GOD, FOR THE PEOPLE OF GOD”

RESPONDING WITH OUR TITHES AND OFFERINGS
Call to Offering
Leader: Jesus sends his disciples into the world to bless all by his grace. With God's love in the Holy Spirit, let us make this our offering to God.
(Ushers, please come forward.)

Music and Collection of the Offering

*Presentation of the Offering
(Those who are able, please stand.)
*Singing of the Doxology
People: Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;
Praise Him, all creatures here below;
Praise Him above, ye heavenly host;
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

*Prayer of Dedication and Thanksgiving
Leader: Like strands of beads, we offer gifts,
that one by one, your love will lift.
That all may have just what they need,
by this we’re bless’d and truly freed.
Hear our prayers, God. Be our guide, Lord.
Holy Spirit, come and fill us.
People: Amen
(Those who are able, remain standing.)

THE “WHY”
(WE GO FORTH)
*Closing Hymn “ Standin’ in the need of prayer”
(See Insert)

*Benediction
Pastor: A note before our Benediction: take your prayer beads home to use throughout the week and then bring them back next week as we continue to learn new ways to pray.
And now hear this word of blessing:
God knows our words before they’re said, knows our need and we are fed. God gives us life, knows our ways, our strength, our path, for all our days. Our strength, our path, for all our days. Go into the world with the assurance that God goes with you, Jesus prays for you, and the Spirit breathes through you, all your days. Let the people say,
People: Amen!
