Drummond Island, Michigan 49726 Jesuit missionaries began serving Catholics on Drummond Island in the 1800s. The current church was constructed in 1942 and then enlarged to meet the needs of the congregation in the 1970s. Since the 1960s diocesan priests at DeTour have ministered to the people of St. Women Religious have played a large role in supporting the church, first through religiou
s education programs and, since the 1980s, by serving as pastoral coordinators. Prior to the 1941 establishment of St. Florence Church, Jesuit missionaries offered Mass at irregular intervals in the private homes of Drummond Island residents. Father Joseph F. Chambon, SJ, is known to have built a church on Drummond Island around 1890. Father Paul Prud’homme, SJ, was the first to visit the mission on a regular basis. He led construction of the current St. Florence Church, dedicated by Bishop Francis J. Magner on June 28, 1942. Jesuits continued serving the mission until 1960 when diocesan priests took over permanently and the church was assigned a mission of DeTour. Parish Life. The St. Florence church was constructed of logs cut and sawed on the island. Bazaars and later a hunter’s dinner were held to raise money for improvements to the house of worship. The parish’s first rectory was purchased in 1950. In 1977 it was stated that the church was only half the size it needed to be to serve the people. “From the opening of the fishing season in May through deer hunting season in November, there are as many people outside as in,” the pastor said while requesting an addition to the structure. The original church, with seating for about 30, is now a wing of the current structure. In 1987 the sanctuary was again renovated. On Aug. 1, 1992 the mission church celebrated its golden anniversary with a commemorative Mass and rededication. A dinner followed in the Drummond Township Hall. In 1966, Ursuline Sisters from St. Ignace began traveling to Drummond Island by boat in the summer months to help the priest with religious summer education programs. In 1986, Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity from Manitowoc, Wis., began serving as pastoral coordinators at DeTour and Drummond Island. The pastor of Goetzville serves as sacramental minister for both Sacred Heart and DeTour. Pastoral Coordinators include Sisters Karen Neuser, 1986-1989; Margey Schmelzle, 1986-1994; Colleen Sweeting 1989-1999, and Lois Risch, 1994-1999. Mass Schedule
