Guess Who's Coming to Shabbas?

Guess Who's Coming to Shabbas? A new initiative strengthening communities and creating meaningful memories one Shabbat dinner at a time.

"Guess Who's Coming to Shabbas?" which began in September 2012, is now being implemented in congregations across the US. Congregants host others for Shabbat dinner, and in subsequent months, those guests also become hosts. The program's goal is to include 100% of the congregation by strengthening Jewish communities one Shabbat dinner at a time.

I just started to unplug for Shabbat, and here's why.

The first time I received an “out of office” message about someone having the audacity to take a vacation during the pandemic, my eyes bulged out of my head, like a cartoon character! I just couldn’t believe anyone had (or chose to take) the time to unplug and unwind during this crazy time. Bu...

Shared from a dear friend who knows how this pandemic is eating away (pun intended) at my Shabbas dinner heart.

The Sabbath, or Shabbat in Hebrew, has long been a weekly holiday of renewal, in which Jews separate themselves from the world, including technology. But during the pandemic, Shabbat dinners are going online and religious leaders are debating whether changes like that ought to remain permanent.

Large gatherings on Friday nights are out, but baking challah is on the rise

Yup, it's depressing, but we've seen worse, so let's be grateful for all we DO have! .

Will we appreciate Shabbat with friends and family more when this is behind us? I hope so. But until then, if you can't be with the ones you love, love the ones you're with. Shabbat Shalom.

Everyone has a go-to recipe for a one-bowl cake. Here's mine. It's a combination of three or four recipes and, yes, I think it's the best. Or should I say

A Prayer of Hope During this Pandemic
by Rabbi Naomi Levy

We are frightened, God,
Worried for our loved ones,
Worried for our world.
Helpless and confused,
We turn to You
Seeking comfort, faith and hope.
Teach us God, to turn our panic into patience,
And our fear into acts of kindness and support.
Our strong must watch out for our weak,
Our young must take care of our old.
Help each one of us to do our part to halt the spread of this virus
Send strength and courage to the doctors and nurses
In the frontlines of this battle,
Fortify them with the full force of their healing powers.
Send wisdom and insight to the scientists
Working day and night across the world to discover healing treatments.
Bless their efforts, God.
Fill our leaders with the wisdom and the courage
To choose wisely and act quickly.
Help us, God, to see that we are one world,
One people
Who will rise above this pandemic together.
Send us health God,
Watch over us,
Grace us with Your love,
Bless us with Your healing light.
Hear us God,
Heal us God,
Amen.

Shabbat Shalom
