Msg #2519 A Good Soldier
What The Bible Says
Good Samaritan's Penny Pulpit by Pastor Ed Rice
“Thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus … endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ” (2Tim.2:1,3). In Ephesians 6 every Christian is equipt as a soldier; in vr.10-13 we find our strength, our enemy, and our stand; in 14-17 our armor, in 17-18 our weapons; and in vr.18-19 our mission - gospel utterance, boldness, and ambassadorship. That mission is reiterated in 2Cor.5:17-21 where “all things are become new” so that we can be “ministers of reconciliation” and “ambassadors for Christ.” That'll take “feet shod with the preparation of the gospel” as was said. In our text today Paul describes an advanced soldier training, sort of like post-graduate school, or more-so pulling up your big-boy-pants. When one matures past babes desiring the sincere milk of the word (1Pet.2:2) and moves through the meat of the seven principles of the oracles of God (Heb.5:11-6:3) he is ready for strong meat, ready to “endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.” In Paul's first epistle to Timothy he gives twelve charges in six chapters. In his second he covers being a good soldier, who can take on strong meat; i.e. to soldier, study, sanctify, be a vessel unto honour (2:1-5, 15, 19, 21). This charge is not for everyone. Unfortunately some Christians may wander in the wilderness of immaturity for forty years; we know some who have stagnated there; don't be them. Like Joshua, press on into the Promise and posses the land. Be a good soldier, endure the hardness, taste the fruit, study, sanctify, and be a vessel unto honour. It will be worth it all, when we see Jesus. “Faith cometh by … the word of God. … Above all, taking the shield of faith” (Rom.10:17, Eph.6:16).

Msg #2518 Utterance, Boldness, The Gospel
What The Bible Says
Good Samaritan's Penny Pulpit by Pastor Ed Rice
As Paul prepped the saints of Ephesus for spiritual warfare, he identified the enemies, the rulers of the darkness of the world, the spiritual wickedness in the high places; he assigned able armor, for loins, breastplate, feet, shield, helmet; and identified two assigned and able offensive weapons. We mention “the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God”, but often overlook the weapon. “praying always with all prayer and supplication in the spirit” (Eph.6:17-18). The challenge for us to use this latter weapon effectively is, “watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints” (vr.18), but Paul doesn’t stop there. Verse 19 concluding “and (pray) for me, that ( #1) utterance may be given onto me, ( #2) that I may open my mouth boldly, ( #3) to make known the mystery of the gospel.” “Recall that after Truth and Righteousness are in place, the first preparation for spiritual warfare was, “feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace.” Note here that, Paul, a master at preaching the mystery of the gospel, asks for prayer for his utterance, and his boldness! How much the more do I need such ongoing prayer? How much more does your pastor? How much the more does your fellow church member?
Evangelist H. Boyd would ask us, “How long does it take you to have a 'Sweet Hour of Prayer'? A week? A month? Praying over food three minutes per day, it would take 20 days to get in an hour!” David prayed seven times a day. Daniel, prayed openly, on his knees, facing Jerusalem, three times a day. Jesus, the Only Begotten Son of God prayed continually, often all night. Paul called out our two offensive weapons for the warfare of the Spirit filled believer. Let’s not let either get rusty.

Msg #2516 Easter's Thousand Tongues
What The Bible Says
Good Samaritan's Penny Pulpit by Pastor Ed Rice
On this years Resurrection Morning, the Sunday immediately following Passover, "If I had a thousand tongues, I would praise Christ with them all!" In 1739 that phrase was heard by a new convert and on the first anniversary of his conversion to Christ, Charles Wesley wrote an eighteen-stanza poem which he then framed into the familiar hymn “O for a thousand tongues to sing my great Redeemer's praise, the glories of my God and King, the triumphs of his grace!” It echos from Rev.5:13 “And every creature which is in heaven, and on the earth, and under the earth, and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, heard I saying, Blessing, and honour, and glory, and power, be unto him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb for ever and ever.” It resonates from Psalm.145:10-12 “All thy works shall praise thee, O LORD; and thy saints shall bless thee. They shall speak of the glory of thy kingdom, and talk of thy power; To make known to the sons of men his mighty acts, and the glorious majesty of his kingdom.”
Every Sunday believers commemorate the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ in worship, they have for 1,995 years now; … every Sunday! But this one falls on a Sunday that is special on our calendar, it is the Sunday after Passover, and Passover, 1,995 years ago, was the day they crucified our Lord. It is not difficult for a genuine believer to keep his focus on such a day. The world, its society, overbearing Easter customs, and even the liturgical orthodoxy, strive to draw away from the genuine recognition of the day, but genuine Christians, being genuine students of the Bible, will never miss the importance of this day of worship.

Msg #2515 Palm Sunday, Passover, Easter Sunday
What The Bible Says
Good Samaritan's Penny Pulpit by Pastor Ed Rice
Sunday April 13th 2025 is Passover. It starts Saturday evening because God counted his creation days as “the evening and the morning.” The very predictable first new moon after the solar equinox, starts the Hebrew month of Abib, and the 14th day of that month is the Hebrew Passover. The 15th is a Sabbath Day no matter what day of the week it falls on. The Apostle John clarifies it, “The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away” (Jhn.19:31).
Our Lord Jesus Christ is our Passover Lamb, he was crucified on Passover 1,995 years ago, it was on the 14th of Abib. The day after was a Sabbath, and the Saturday after that was a 7th Day Sabbath. The Sunday following Passover was Resurrection Day. Believers have celebrated the Sunday after Passover as Resurrection Day for 1,995 years now. It is on April 20th this year, that is the Sunday after Passover 2025.
Sunday, April 13th 2025 is also Palm-Sunday, where Christians celebrate the Sunday that the crowds received Jesus into Jerusalem with cries of “Hosanna to the Son of David: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest.” That happened on the 10th of Abib, when the Passover lamb was separated from the flock (Exod.12:2-3). Christians should carefully commemorate what our Lord Jesus Christ did for us; “how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; … For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him” (1Cor.15:3-4,2Cor.5:21).

Msg #2514 Protect Your Head
What The Bible Says
Good Samaritan's Penny Pulpit by Pastor Ed Rice
“And take the helmet of salvation” (Eph.6:17). The 5th and last piece of armor donned by the saint in Paul's Roman Armor illustration is head protection. Salvation itself was first donned with gospel truth and Christ's righteousness; donning the helmet of salvation here represents two functions of a helmet, in the fray of battle the Roman helmet was for head protection, but also for identification. Salvation protects your mind. Sometimes doubts assail, but a Christian needs to know that they know that they are saved. “These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, … ” (1Jhn.5:13). Peter charges us to Know, to Grow, then to Go and Show (1Pet.1:18,2:2,21). And Romans charges that when we pillow our head at night we should know that we know; “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. … The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God” (Rom.8:14,16). It is also in our head where, in the renewing of the mind, there is the transformation that prevents conformation to the world (Rom.12:2). And, it's in the head, where “ in lowliness of mind (we) each esteem other better than themselves” and we “Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus” (Phip.2:3,5). Genuine salvation protects your head, but it also identifies you as a saint. A genuine born-again believer stands out from those supposing infant baptism or confirmation or church membership got them 'saved'. They stand out from Latter Day Saints, and Jehovah false witnesses who deny the deity of our Lord Jesus Christ. So, take the helmet of salvation, protect your head, where it boldly.

Msg #2513 Above All – Shield of Faith
What The Bible Says
Good Samaritan's Penny Pulpit by Pastor Ed Rice
The Roman soldier was well equipped as a fighter, but the smallest unit of a Roman Legion, lead by a Centurion, was its premier fighting force; a soldier was equipped to fight in a unit. Roman shields, three inches short of 4 foot by 3 foot, would interlock to form an impenetrable barrier to fiery darts as the unit would advance toward a city wall, or withstand an onslaught of the enemy. Christians are told, “Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked” (Eph.6:16). Your faith is meant to not only protect you, but to interlock with the faith of others in an independent called out body of believers where it can quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. Thus a born-again-saved believer is to unite with other born-again-saved believers in church membership; “not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, … exhorting one another, … wherewith one may edify another” and “comfort yourselves together and edify one another, even as” the saints of Thessalonica did (Heb.10:25,Rom.14:19,1Thes.5:11). It's called 'synergism' where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. It's called Christ's church. It's an independent, autonomous Bible believing, assembled body, practicing believer baptism, not infant baptism, with a born-again-saved and called man of God Pastor feeding the Lord's sheep, following Bible rules about church order. Blended voices in a quartet or choir are better than one voice crying in the wilderness. Church is believers with beautiful feet shod with the preparation of the gospel, involved in bus ministry, Sunday School, visitation, music, choir, janitorial, greeting, discipling, deaconing, edifying. Don't park your shield somewhere and sit cross armed in a pew grumbling! Minister, edify; we are in a battle down here.

Msg #2512 Know The Enemy
What The Bible Says
Good Samaritan's Penny Pulpit by Pastor Ed Rice
For years in the military it was emphasized, a soldier must know his enemies. Communism-Socialism-Marxism were analyzed throughout the 70s and 80s; Islam, another socio-economic-political enemy striving to rule the world, exposed in the next decades. It's concerning how deceived the general public is in this 21st century. But God, through the pen of the Apostle Paul demands that his soldiers know their enemy. “Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places” (Eph.6:11-12). This prelude to the five pieces of armor we are to don, rounds out a study of the enemy. A “principality” is the thing that commences, the first person in a series, the leader, and it is in the plural here, as is “powers” and “rulers”, these then labeled “spiritual wickedness in high places.” In Revelation 12 Jesus exposes the prime principality, “9 And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world, … and his angels, …10 the accuser of our brethren … which accused them before our God day and night.” 11 (overcame by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony)” Peter has warned us, “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour” (1Pet.5:8). And John, “For many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist” (2Joh.1:7). Know your enemy, often called priest, or clergy, armor yourself for the battle.

Msg #2509 Really? He Gets Us?
What The Bible Says
Good Samaritan's Penny Pulpit by Pastor Ed Rice
For God's nation a “memorial” to how much God hates idolatry is written in Hebrew and lays in the Major Prophets of the Holy Bible. For the heathen nations a “memorial” to how much God hates fornication, particularly so**my, lays at 31.56°N,35.47°E, the lowest place on earth, covered by a Dead Sea, over top of brimstone four miles deep! Previously in that valley, “Lot lifted up his eyes, and beheld all the plain of Jordan, that it was well watered, before the LORD destroyed S***m and Gomorrah, even as the garden of the LORD” (Gen.13:10). Today it's landscape memorializing how much God hates so**my.
When an apostate clergy from an apostate church “sanctified” Ithaca, NY as a “transgender sanctuary city”, she said, “ 'jesus gets us' because he was a transgender, he was homosexual, he fondled children, 'he gets us' because he had all our temptations.” Genuine Christians are justly repulsed; knowing that is “beyond the pale” of apostasy and deep into the depravity of blasphemy.
In God's outspoken memorial against idolatry he said Israel and Judah's sin was so vile “neither came it into my mind, that they should do this abomination” (Jer.32:34-35). In like manner, for mankind, in their vile fornications, indulged with reprobate minds (Rom.1:21-32), there are places Jesus' mind never went. Yeah, “we have a great high priest, … Jesus the Son of God, … not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. … For such an high priest became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens” (Heb.4:14-15,7:26). Genuine Christians should be leery of the “He gets us” phrase and well versed in the “He saves us” phrase (Joh.3:17).

Msg #2508 Forsake Sin Early On
What The Bible Says
Good Samaritan's Penny Pulpit by Pastor Ed Rice
At Youth-Ablaze it was said,“Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil.” When one commits an evil work, sucks that smoking w**d, sips that mocking wine, watches that vile video, and sees no consequence but the pleasure of sin for a season, they fall headlong into Ecclesiastes 8:11. Prime example, Abimelech in Judges 9. His father, Gideon, was a Bible hero but prone to sin, he had many wives, 70 sons, and a concubine in Shechem. She named her son “my fathers a king”, and pulled strings to make him one. He slew his 70 brothers, which pleased the men of Shechem, but displeased God, who said so out loud in a poignant fable (vrs.8–20). Abimelech ignored God, had a successful reign for three years, and when Gaal rose up against him, Abimelech defeated him soundly, destroyed Shechem, and burned 1000 men and women in its tower.
Reveling in victory he came to Thebez and when he set out to do it again; “A certain woman cast a piece of a millstone upon Abimelech’s head, and all to brake his skull” (9:53). He tried a cover-up story, but God recorded the truth for us (9:54). “Thus God rendered the wickedness of Abimelech, which he did unto his father, in slaying his seventy brethren: And all the evil of the men of Shechem did God render upon their heads: and upon them came the curse of Jotham the son of Jerubbaal” (9:56-57).
Forsake your presumptuous sin; “God judgeth the righteous, and God is angry with the wicked every day” (Ps.7:11); “Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap” (Gal.6:7).

Msg #2507 Tabernacle Materials
What The Bible Says
Good Samaritan's Penny Pulpit by Pastor Ed Rice
The materials that God uses to arrange for his tabernacling with man were created by God with characteristics that carefully portray the holiness of this union. In Exodus 25 God's trinity of precious metals portray his untarnishable righteousness in gold, our tarnishable connection to it in silver, and the judgment and chastisement that make it possible in the brass of the brazen altar. The trinity of colors called out, were created when he said “Let there be light,” and the sky is not blue because of what Tyndall discovered or the Rayleigh effect; no, the sky is blue because there is a God in heaven, who robed the glory of his heavens in a blue canopy. Purple is the color of kings, because it is a combination of infrared and ultraviolet that marks the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. As visible light disappears into an infrared, it is scarlet, the color of blood, life and death.
Ten 4x28 cubit curtains carded from flax and woven into fine twined linen, with taches of gold, covered the tabernacle. Linen gets softer with use and brighter when exposed to the sun, we will wear it in Rev.19:8. Also 11 curtains of cashmere, then ram's skin dyed red and then badgers skin, tough as shoe leather with hair once sold by the Fuller-brush man. The forty-eight 2x15 foot gold plated boards holding these curtains up were not made of acacia wood, but from “sh*ttim” wood, a transliterated Hebrew word meaning, trash, junk, or disposed of wood. In the next 15 chapters of Exodus these materials become God tabernacling with man. In the Old Testament, God builds a tabernacle for the people, in the New Testament God builds a people for his tabernacle. We should pay more careful attention to each.
