"[A church] had an operating budget of about $5,000,000, where roughly 75 percent of that went to salaries, overhead, facilities, etc., and about 25 percent went to missions. A decent budget. Compare that to a local nonprofit prison ministry thatโs been in operation for close to forty years in the same county, which had a budget of less than $200,000.
I think I recently read that the average tithe is below 3 percent. I already said earlier in the book that the same county where this church and nonprofit are located had a budget for the prison system that exceeded $60 million. We know that one of the reasons people remain in community jails longer than their mandatory sentence is that they lack either a home, transportation, a job, or family to go to when they are out.
What if the church - ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐น๐ผ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐น ๐ฐ๐ต๐๐ฟ๐ฐ๐ต, ๐๐ผ๐๐ฟ ๐๐บ๐ฎ๐น๐น ๐ด๐ฟ๐ผ๐๐ฝ - were able to increase tithing and dedicate a portion of that to the local prison ministry, who has an insufficient budget to handle these needs, to provide transportation for the release of inmates who then could get to work and get to their treatment, or even provide them with a place to live temporarily. Itโs costly to house inmates. They need to serve their time. But isnโt it a waste of taxpayer money that they remain in jail longer because of the reasons I earlier recorded? The church could step in to offer a much-needed service, thereby reducing government spending and affording the opportunity to share the gospel, in both word and deed. The problem today for us as a church is..."
