Matthew 18:15-20

When we are out of fellowship with others, it’s hard to be in fellowship with God. When you find yourself in a situation where someone has wronged you, remember what we pray each week as we say the Lord’s Prayer - "Forgive us our sins as we have forgiven those who sinned against us." Beloved, forgive as you have been forgiven. Amen

Matthew 16:21-28

When it comes to my relationship and following of Christ, God doesn’t merely want me to put my toe in the water, but dive in with a cannon ball that touches everyone with the love of God. Such commitment is not based on my hard work, but on God’s incredible gift of Jesus. In the family of God, the heart of commitment follows in the footsteps of Jesus. So how do you enter the swimming pool? Are you a disciple or a fan? Are we willing to be fully committed to be a disciple or are we satisfied with being a follower at convenience? Are you content with just sticking your toe in, or have you counted the cost and plunged into a life with Christ?

Matthew 16:13-20

“Who do you say that I am?” Jesus asks. We’re constantly answering this question, whether we know it or not. We answer it every day through our actions, living out what we believe. Those around us see what our actions reveal about who we think Jesus is and what he means to us.

Someone said to me once that we can see the features of God in a single smile. Look for that smile in the people you meet.

At the beginning of a new school year, O God of wisdom, we offer thanks and praise for the gift of new beginnings and for the opportunity to learn and to wonder. We pray for teachers, students, and staff that this year may be rewarding for all. Be with us as we face the challenge of new tasks, the fear of failure, the expectations of parents, friends, and self. In our learning and our teaching, may we grow in service to others and in love for your world, through Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen

Matthew 15:10-28

It’s interesting to observe that things haven’t really changed much today. There are people who are labeled as not fitting into the box or classified as unworthy. We still see hatred, prejudice, and division. We tend to label those who don’t quite fit our idea of who’s “worthy” or “deserving.” Sometimes, we call them “dogs” or even worse, simply because they’re different from us.

That is the way this world operates, but as followers of Jesus, we must be different. Jesus’ meeting with the Canaanite woman shows us that God is always stepping into new places and tearing down walls. God didn’t choose us based on our merit or who we are. God chooses us because God loves us. Because God love us, we should love others. To follow Jesus and do what Jesus did, we need to open our hearts so we can love others, even those we might not think deserve it.
