Church leaders held meetings where children were told to forgive the man who s*xually abused them and forget the abuse. If they spoke of it, the sin would be theirs.

In Minnesota, leaders of an Old Apostolic Lutheran Church community enabled a child abuser by telling his victims that once the sins were “washed away in the blood of reconciliation,” they could never speak of them again.

A Clermont County grand jury indicted the Blanchester, Ohio, resident on 56 counts of s*xual battery and 14 counts of unlawful s*xual conduct with a minor — all third-degree felonies.

If convicted of all charges, Essert faces a maximum penalty of 280 years in prison.
