Lenten Reflection: Friday of the Fourth Week – God Hears the Crushed in Spirit ✝️
"The Lord is near to the brokenhearted, and saves the crushed in spirit." — Psalm 34:18
Today's readings (Wisdom 2:1a, 12-22; Psalm 34; John 7:1-2, 10, 25-30) reveal a sobering truth: the wicked often plot against the just. They reason unsoundly, blind to God's faithful plan. Yet the Psalmist cries out with unshakable hope: God hears. God rescues. God draws near.
In the Gospel, Jesus walks through Jerusalem amid murmuring crowds—some acclaim Him good, others brand Him a deceiver. Yet He teaches boldly, evading plots until His hour arrives.
To everyone feeling frustrated, isolated, or crushed by trials today:
This Lent is not about outward penance alone. It is about interior conversion of the heart. The wicked may rage, but God draws near the broken. He invites us to fasting, prayer, and almsgiving—not as empty rituals, but as paths to reconciliation with self, with God, and with neighbor.
Fridays recall Christ's Passion. Make them intense moments of self-denial, spiritual exercises, and charity toward the struggling.
In your weariness, cry out! Like the righteous, trust the Lord who rescues from all troubles. Unite your sufferings to Jesus, who faced rejection yet triumphed. Through penance, tears of repentance cover sins. Let reading Scripture and the Our Father revive your conversion.
Pray with us:
Lord, hear our cry this Lenten Friday. Save the crushed in spirit, configure us to Your Cross, and lead us to Easter joy. Amen.
