HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!

Greetings from the Zion Lutheran Church in Downs!

Attendance: This Sunday, 38 members attended the service.

Readings: the First Reading came from Acts 17:16-31, the Epistle was from 1 Peter 3:13-22, and the Gospel was from John 14: 15-21.

Sermon: Pastor Stenson’s sermon was entitled “A Known God”. How many of these have you heard? “I think God is like your conscience, not a real being.” Or “Jesus may have been a real person, but he was just a great teacher of morality. He wasn’t divine, and there’s no way He was perfect or paid for my sins on the cross.” Or “Jesus’ resurrection was just a symbolic thing to give people hope for the future; it wasn’t a physical reality.”

If you’ve heard these ideas from others and let them go unchallenged, repent. If you’ve thought them yourself at times, or not felt them important enough to lose sleep over, repent all the more. We have a lot in common with those who disputed with Paul, who scoffed at his preaching of the risen Christ, He who will come again to judge the living and the dead.

Like Paul, prepare yourself for this noble, God-given task. Hear and study God’s life-changing Word, so you are prepared to give an answer for the hope you have in Jesus. Point others to the cross of Christ and tell what He did for them there. Continually remember that by your baptism, you were forever linked to His atoning death, and to His glorious resurrection.

Greetings from the Zion Lutheran Church in Downs!

Attendance: This Sunday, 41 members attended the service.

Readings: the First Reading came from Acts 6: 1-9; 7:2a, 51-60, the Epistle was from 1 Peter 2: 2-10, and the Gospel was from John 14: 1-14.

Sermon: Pastor Stenson’s sermon was entitled “A Father’s Gifts”. How many times a day do you think: “If I only had $10,000 to pay off my credit cards and get back to square one,” or, “If only my wife, or husband, hadn't died,” or, “If only I was 3 inches taller, and my waist was 3 inches smaller”?

How many times a day do you think: “If only we had better leaders in the Church and in our government,” or, “If only we had a few more people here to carry the load.” Then, life would be good, and you could go about your life as you’d like, right?

All the things that you may want to have in your life: honor and respect, fame and fortune, physical pleasure, a life of leisure, health and intellect – all these things are found in the Son of God. But they are not found in the way we might first think, and certainly not in the way our fallen nature wants.

So, do not be afraid to ask for the things of this earth. Go ahead, pray for a winning lottery ticket. Pray for your team to win. Pray that you may get good grades, and that the pretty girl or handsome boy will like you. Go ahead: Pray without fear. Your Father will not fail you. He will not only not give you a snake if you ask for bread; He will also not give you a snake even if you, in ignorance or foolishness, ask for a snake. He loves you, and your prayers please Him.

Greetings from the Zion Lutheran Church in Downs!

Attendance: This Sunday, 43 members attended the service, and 4 kids attended the children’s sermon.

Readings: the First Reading came from Acts 2: 14a, 36-41, the Epistle was from 1 Peter 1: 17-25, and the Gospel was from Luke 24: 13-35.

Children’s Sermon: Last week we talked about the disciples being frightened and hiding after Jesus had risen. They felt abandoned and disappointed by him. They forgot what Jesus had been teaching then. He said that he had come to die for us and that it was necessary and important for him to die and great things would come from it.

When things go bad in our life, we sometimes forget about Jesus’ teachings also. We feel frightened and alone. But Jesus said he will never leave us or abandon us.

Sermon: Pastor Stenson’s sermon was entitled “Faith on the Road to Emmaus”. Pastor Stenson asked the congregation, “How’s your faith doing today?”

Some might think that’s a strange thing to ask those gathered in worship on a Sunday morning. But even those who come faithfully can have moments of weakness in their faith.

Sometimes we are so affected by things of this world—illness, relationship difficulties, work problems, financial issues, war—that we begin to wonder if God really meant it when He said, “Never will I leave you; Never will I forsake you.”

Over and over, God has made this promise to those who have faith in Him.

Regardless of where you are in your life; if your faith is soaring or if it seems weak, trust in the Lord. Know that He will never leave you nor forsake you. Remember the promise Jesus spoke to His disciples just before He ascended into heaven: “surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
