We, the people of Downingtown Friends Meeting, a Quaker community, have for some months been concerned over violent acts during otherwise peaceful civic demonstrations across our region, our state, and our nation. In response, our meeting several months ago approved the following statement of beliefs which we wish to share with you here: “The members of Downingtown Friends Meeting support peaceful political and human rights demonstrations by all people. This is just one more way that we seek to honor that of God in all people, especially in these troubled times. It is in that Light that we renounce acts of violence, whether physical or verbal, in person or virtually, in pursuit of social justice aims and reject the notion that violence is ever justifiable.”
In light of the assault on the nation’s capital on Jan. 6, 2021, and reports of additional lawlessness planned during the inauguration of President-Elect Joseph Biden Jr. and Vice President-Elect Kamala Harris, Downingtown Friends Meeting wishes to affirm our commitment to peaceful public demonstrations. Once again, we renounce acts of violence, intimidation, and threats to our democracy.
It is our fervent prayer that our nation is restored to peace, continues respectful debate, and finds a way to affirm that of God in all people. Cheryl McVickar Presiding Clerk Downingtown Friends Meeting 🕊
