Downingtown Friends Meeting

Downingtown Friends Meeting A Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends

We, at Downingtown Friends Meeting, are a spiritually led, socially conscious, vibrant and welcoming faith community of Friends (with a capital "F") who practice the Quaker faith. Entering our third century of Quaker presence in Downingtown, Pa., our growing community, made up of people from all walks of life, acts as an extended family, helping each other in times of need. And while our main purp

ose is to gather in silent worship, we’re also an active community, involved in all sorts of activities. Adults take part in brown-bag and book discussions, cooperative dinners, Christmas chorus, and prayer-for-healing groups. Our many children enjoy attending our excellent Sunday School, as well as participating in weekend campouts, and trips to foreign countries for our older teens. And if all this isn’t enough, our Meeting family comes together to put on our annual Fall Festival where we celebrate the season with good food, good music, and good fun.

A piece of history about our Meetinghouse: Agricultural pioneer and Quaker John Hershey once lived in our Schoolhouse! 100 years ago, he planted a tree nursery right on our Meetinghouse property and across the street -- he filled this nursery with the best fruit and nut tree species he could cultivate.

Today, many of these trees still stand tall, producing a prolific harvest of the sweetest fruits! Come learn more about them and take a Hershey Tree Tour by Restore Our Roots - Downingtown, PA at the Friends Fall Festival this Saturday 🧡

We, the people of Downingtown Friends Meeting, a Quaker community, have for some months been concerned over violent acts during otherwise peaceful civic demonstrations across our region, our state, and our nation. In response, our meeting several months ago approved the following statement of beliefs which we wish to share with you here: “The members of Downingtown Friends Meeting support peaceful political and human rights demonstrations by all people. This is just one more way that we seek to honor that of God in all people, especially in these troubled times. It is in that Light that we renounce acts of violence, whether physical or verbal, in person or virtually, in pursuit of social justice aims and reject the notion that violence is ever justifiable.”

In light of the assault on the nation’s capital on Jan. 6, 2021, and reports of additional lawlessness planned during the inauguration of President-Elect Joseph Biden Jr. and Vice President-Elect Kamala Harris, Downingtown Friends Meeting wishes to affirm our commitment to peaceful public demonstrations. Once again, we renounce acts of violence, intimidation, and threats to our democracy.

It is our fervent prayer that our nation is restored to peace, continues respectful debate, and finds a way to affirm that of God in all people. Cheryl McVickar Presiding Clerk Downingtown Friends Meeting 🕊
