Regarding today's events:
Today was a very emotional day. A couple of our Pastors and other community members witnessed a man being detained and taken away by men that were masked and armed. They wore vests that said "Police" but they refused to identify themselves. Our concern was for the man's well being. We don't know if they were ICE agents or from any other law enforcement agency; the Downey Police Department confirmed they were not their officers.
As as with any politically charged event, it's very easy for misinformation and exaggerations to run rampant. To clarify:
1. The individual was a community member that was simply walking through our parking lot and had no connections to the church.
2. Pastor Tanya was not pushed or shoved.
3. There was no altercation or obstruction; we wanted to ensure the individual was aware of his rights, and encouraged other witnesses to document as much as possible.
We ask for civility as the news of this event continues to be shared, and ask that people see past the emotions that drive us away from being able to see others as fully human and worthy of dignity. Let's take the time to listen to one another and try find shared values and ideas as people that care deeply for our communities and our country.
En relación con los eventos de hoy:
Hoy fue un día con muchas emociones. Algunos de nuestros Pastores y otros miembros de la comunidad fueron testigos de cómo un hombre era detenido y se lo llevaban
hombres encapuchados y armados. Llevaban chalecos con la palabra "Policía", pero se negaron a identificarse. Nuestra preocupación fue por el bienestar del
hombre. No sabemos si eran agentes de Inmigración y Control de Aduanas (ICE) o de alguna otra agencia; el Departamento de Policía de Downey confirmó que no eran sus oficiales.
Como ocurre con cualquier evento con carga política, es muy fácil que la desinformación y las exageraciones se propaguen. Para aclarar:
1. El individuo era un miembro de la comunidad que simplemente estaba caminando por nuestro estacionamiento y no tenía ninguna conexión con la iglesia.
2. La Pastora Tanya no fue empujada ni agredida.
3. No hubo altercado ni obstrucción; nuestro deseo fue asegurar que el individuo estuviera al tanto de sus derechos y alentamos a otros testigos a documentar todo lo posible.
Les pedimos civismo a medida que la noticia de este evento continúa compartiéndose, y les invitamos a que miren más allá de las emociones que nos impiden ver a los demás como seres humanos plenos y dignos. Tomemos el tiempo para escucharnos mutuamente e intentemos encontrar valores e ideas compartidas como personas que nos preocupamos profundamente por nuestras comunidades y nuestro país.
