The Catholic Church today celebrates the Solemnity of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist. This feast occurs three months after the Solemnity of the Annunciation; the Gospel for that day, specifically Luke 1:36-37, notes Gabriel telling Mary, “Elizabeth, your relative, has also conceived a son in her old age, and this is the sixth month for her who was called barren; for nothing will be impossible for God.”

The Gospel for today’s solemnity, also from Luke 1, recounts the birth of John the Baptist. While the Church typically commemorates saints on the anniversary of their death, it commemorates the nativity of John the Baptist, as it commemorates the nativities of Jesus and Mary, because, Pope Benedict XVI noted, “it is closely connected with the mystery of the Incarnation of the Son of God. In fact, from the time when he was in his mother’s womb John was the precursor of Jesus” (see https://www.vaticannews.va/en/word-of-the-day/2026/06/24.html).

Today is the 11th Sunday in Ordinary Time: the first Sunday in Ordinary Time the Catholic Church has celebrated since Ash Wednesday. The weekday liturgical calendar returned to Ordinary Time the week after Pentecost, but the Sunday celebrations of the Solemnities of the Most Holy Trinity and the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ pre-empted Ordinary Time on Sunday until this weekend.

Ordinary Time is the part of the liturgical calendar not revolving around Christmas (Advent beforehand and the Christmas season afterward) or Easter (Lent beforehand and the Easter Season afterward).

Ordinary Time, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops notes, “take[s] us through the life of Christ. This is the time of conversion. This is living the life of Christ. Ordinary Time is a time for growth and maturation, a time in which the mystery of Christ is called to pe*****te ever more deeply into history until all things are finally caught up in Christ. The goal, toward which all of history is directed, is represented by the final Sunday in Ordinary Time, the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe” (https://www.usccb.org/prayer-worship/liturgical-year/ordinary-time).

The Catholic Church today celebrates the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. This feast, held on the third Friday after Pentecost, was first celebrated in the 17th century. Among the visions of St. Margaret Mary Alacoque was Christ asking for the institution of a feast to honor his heart and to make reparation through prayer for offenses received. Pope St. John Paul II in 1995 instituted the World Day of Prayer for the Sanctification of Priests to be held on the same day as well.

For more information on this solemnity, see https://www.vaticannews.va/en/liturgical-holidays/solemnity-of-the-most-sacred-heart-of-jesus.html. For today’s readings and commentary by Pope St. John Paul II on them, see https://www.vaticannews.va/en/word-of-the-day/2026/06/12.html.
