Street Smarts - National Righteousness

"Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people He chose for His inheritance" ~ Psalm 33:12

This country is which most of us have been blessed to be born and live our entire lives has always been known as a "Christian nation". Though some wish to debate the morality of the founding fathers and whether they professed agreement with all the tenets of our faith, it is undeniable when looking at our original documents that Christianity and the Biblical tradition were strong influences in the creation of our system of government. But sin corrupts, and whether we are talking about God's chosen people the Israelites or our fellow Americans, the blessings fade as we turn our eyes further and further away from Him. Where does that leave the followers of Jesus now? What responsibility do we have to live righteously in the midst of unrighteousness? In what ways should we participate in the choosing of our governing authorities when we look to the right and to the left and don't find many candidates who embody the ways of Jesus? These questions and more will be answered this week at Friendship, as we talk about "National Righteousness" just a few days before our nation's mid-term elections. We'll also look at the example of Nehemiah to teach us how to respond to the darkness and despair we see in the world. Don't miss this message on a subject that impacts all of us and all our neighbors!

Street Smarts - No Wasted Words

"May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer" ~ Psalm 19:14

The words of our mouths and the meditations of our hearts - two things that so easily get tied up by the cares and temptations of the world. David understood that His Rock and Redeemer sees and knows all things, so he kept in mind his desire that God would be pleased with what is in his heart and what comes out of His mouth. Too often, we rely on the strength of our own will to clean up our speech and focus on saying only that which builds others up. Yet, time and again throughout Scripture, we are reminded by Jesus that what comes out of the mouth flows from what is within the heart. We cannot change our outward behavior and speech if we are not being inwardly transformed by our Lord. This week at Friendship, we'll discuss how we get to a point of having "No Wasted Words". Our words are wasted when they are unnecessary and do nothing to encourage and train another person. Angry speech, cursing or coarse joking, and gossip are all problems that originate in our hearts, so we must be humbly surrendered to the work of the Holy Spirit in transforming us and renewing our minds. Join us for a message which every human being needs to hear!

Street Smarts - The Blessing of Marriage

"Another thing you do: You flood the Lord's altar with tears. You weep and wail because He no longer looks with favor on your offerings or accepts them with pleasure from your hands. You ask, 'Why?' It is because the Lord is the witness between you and the wife of your youth. You have been unfaithful to her, though she is your partner, the wife of your marriage covenant" ~ Malachi 2:13-14

We men have been making this mistake for thousands of years now, thinking that God accepts our worship or blesses our efforts even when we are harsh or unfaithful to our wives. Of course, unfaithfulness can involve sexual immorality, but even if you have avoided that sin, the idea here includes much more than that. The original Hebrew means "to act or deal treacherously". Are you expecting God to bless your home, ministry, or work while you are mistreating your wife? Are you justifying it because of her sins and issues? Wives, are you doing your best to fulfill God's purpose for you in marriage? You are not responsible for your husband's choice to deal treacherously with you, but you are responsible for your actions and words, and you have much power in building him up or tearing him down. We all need to be reminded of God's intention for the marital relationship, and get back to obeying His will. This week at Friendship, we will talk about "The Blessing of Marriage". Maybe that's where it needs to start. Do you even still view marriage as the blessing God intended in your life? If not, something's wrong, and God wants to speak to you on it. Come and hear from His Word on this matter!

We will also be celebrating the Lord's Supper at all three services, as it is a reminder of His covenant with us. As a reminder, all who have accepted Jesus as Savior and strive to follow Him as Lord are welcome at His table.

Street Smarts - Rare Faithfulness

"Never stop praying" ~ 1 Thessalonians 5:17

One of the shortest verses in the entire Bible is also one of the most practical for us in our journey with Christ. In the midst of his final instructions to the believers in Thessalonica, Paul talks about being joyful, remaining thankful, striving to do what is good for others, and rejecting evil. And he also includes the directive to "never stop praying". This could be confusing for some because we've learned to treat prayer like a solemn religious exercise rather than a conversation with our Creator through our Savior (which is why it's important to pray "in Jesus' name"). But I don't think Paul's point here is that we must be in a continual posture of prayer. Instead, I think he's urging the believers to maintain a spirit of prayer, understanding that the Holy Spirit is always with us and we can talk to Him about anything, any place, anytime. Whether you've had a good week or bad week, whether you are happy and joyful or feel like your world is being crushed, whether you have walked in godliness or have fallen into sin, God is accessible to us through the blood of Christ. So, be in an ongoing conversation with Him. Sometimes, that means going to a quiet place. Sometimes it's folding hands and bowing heads. Sometimes it's looking up to the sky. Sometimes it's a gentle whisper in a tough moment. Jesus modeled every one of these during His time on earth. This week at Friendship, we will talk a little bit about prayer but mainly being persistent in it, not giving up or losing heart over a lack of results. The title is "Rare Faithfulness" because that is what our God wants, persistent faith even when most others give up and fall away. Join us for this important message and reminder that God is always our only hope for whatever it is we need!

🎶 We’re excited to welcome the York County Gospel Choir! 🎶

The York County Gospel Choir will be joining us for all three of our services on October 31st & November 1st!

They will be leading us in worship and sharing through song, with the possibility of a testimony as well. We’re looking forward to the encouragement and ministry they will bring to our church!

And our time together will also include a message from Pastor Logan on “National Righteousness.”

Street Smarts - The Narrow Road

"Jews demand signs and Greeks look for wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength" ~ 1 Corinthians 1:22-25

Do you find it surprising that not everyone in your life wants to follow Jesus? You shouldn't, because many even in the Church don't want to follow Jesus. To follow Him is to revere Him as Lord, and many people would rather be their own masters. They like Jesus and His teachings, but who in the world would lay everything at the feet of a Savior who was crucified? It's foolishness in the eyes of many and a stumbling block to the rest. Of course, the devil doesn't show you the whole truth, because chasing after other things and expecting fulfillment in them is also foolishness. And yet, we know many will continue down that path. We cannot allow what the majority thinks about Jesus to influence what we think about Jesus. Our Savior Himself promised that the gate is wide and the road broad that will lead to destruction. That means that many will find it; it will be popular. This week at Friendship, we'll discuss the other option, "The Narrow Road" spoken of by Jesus which is found and taken by only a few. It's the road which involves vigorous attention, surrender, and complete trust in the Lord. It will never be the easy or popular choice, but it's the only path to everlasting life in God's kingdom. Join us to hear more about this road and why you should take it!
