ST. MARY'S HISTORY by Brian Regan

The stained-glass windows are beautiful. Can you tell us about them? [Part 6]

Let's consider the double figure window close to the altar on the South Main Street side of the church. Even without the inscription "Mater Dolorosa" (Latin for "Sorrowful Mother"), the single tear dropping from her eye tells us this that is a painting of Mary in deep sorrow. Her pairing with St. John has its origin at that moment on Calvary when from the cross Christ says, "Mother, behold your son; Son, your Mother." Images of Jesus's Mother and the Beloved Disciple were thus logically placed together here and near the main crucifix.

Both the Sorrowful Mother and St. John windows are rich with reference and symbolism, in some ways the most detailed and complex in the entire church.
Mary is clothed not in her usual blue mantle but a light purple cloak over which is a black cape whose black cord is knotted at her neck, showing that she is mourning her Son's ex*****on. Her white tunic represents her purity. The cloak's inner lining is gold and red, the same as John's inner cloak and visually tying these two figures. Another visual device unites them: halos of red, which are not typical, and represent the suffering that they endured because of Christ's suffering. None of the other saints in St.
Mary's windows have such halos.

Look closely and you will see that at the Sorrowful Mother's feet are devices of Jesus's passion and suffering: crown of thorns, whip, Roman flagrum, nails. The nails and crown of thorns are laid in a bowl or basin, the latter used to wash Christ's body after his crucifixion and before wrapping it in a shroud. The bottom panel holds a heart with seven arrows piercing it, representing the Seven Sorrows of Mary, and which were described in a previous column about the Sacred Heart of Mary rose window.

St. Mary’s will once again celebrate the Christmas season by illuminating our parish grounds with beautiful Christmas trees, decorated with white lights.

They will remain lit each evening throughout the entire Christmas season.

First Saturday Devotion
To OUR LADY OF FATIMA

The First Saturday Devotion to Our Lady of Fatima will be held on the following dates:

To fulfill Our Lady of Fatima’s request, St. Mary’s Church, Dover invites you to join the observance of five consecutive first Saturdays of the month devotion honoring Our Lady’s Immaculate Heart who in her own words said, “I promise to help at the hour of death, with the grace needed for salvation, whoever on the First Saturday of the five consecutive months shall:

1. Confess and receive Holy Communion
2. Recite five decades of the rosary
3. And keep me company on the twenty mysteries of the Rosary, with the intention of making reparation to me.”

The five 1st Saturdays devotion is one of the principal points of the Fatima message [centering] on the urgent need for mankind to offer reparation and expiate for the many injuries that the Immaculate Heart of Mary suffers from the hands of both impious and indifferent [people] : those sins against her Immaculate Conception, Virginity, Divine Motherhood and spiritual Maternity; also ask for forgiveness when Her children refuse to love Her and those offenses against Her sacred images.

FROM THE PASTOR'S DESK

Dear friends,
In our parish, Baptisms are normally celebrated on the third Sunday of each month immediately following the 11:30 AM Mass. Anyone interested to have their babies baptized should register through our parish website.

Once registered, Barbara, one of our dedicated parish volunteers, will provide further instructions. Parents preparing for the Baptism of their first child are asked to attend a baptismal preparation class. This class is led by Sarah, Phyllis, and our other volunteers, and
covers the theological basics of the sacrament as well as a walkthrough of the rite itself. While we frequently baptize infants, we also offer a dedicated preparation process for adults who wish to enter the Catholic Church. This is called the Order of Christian Initiation for Adults (OCIA). The OCIA involves a more extensive preparation and study of our Catholic faith, culminating in reception of the Sacraments of Initiation-Baptism, Confirmation, and First Holy Communion-during the Easter Vigil.

Regarding the celebration of the sacrament, the Catechism reminds us of the essential visible signs of this holy moment. We read in no. 1239-1240: "Baptism is performed in the most expressive way by triple immersion in the baptismal water.

However, from ancient times it has also been able to be conferred by pouring the water three times over the candidate's head. In the Latin Church this triple infusion is accompanied by the minister's words: "N., I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit."

Hand in Hand - CARE GIVERS MINISTRY
