Prayer for Labor Day

As the sun rises to bring in the new day:

We remember those who descend into the earth, their work begins in darkness, pulling from the earth, the resources we steward.

We remember those who work inside a building away from the light and brightness of the day.

We remember those who work outside in the harsh elements of our world, the bitter cold and sweltering heat of extremes.

We remember those who do not have a job to go to, who are struggling to meet the needs of their daily living expenses, for whom the day becomes long and arduous.

As the sun sets to bring in the evening of rest:

We remember those who work in the night.

We remember those who are trying to recover from their labor and toils of the day.

We remember those who participate in unsafe and dangerous work.

We pray for a renewed sense of dignity in their lives and in their work.

God, in your goodness, you have made a home for the worker. Make a place in our hearts for compassion to the men and women who labor tirelessly for basic necessities. Ensure a place for the men and women who are struggling to find work. Grant us your wisdom to greet and care for those who are unable to work due to illness or circumstances that prevent their participation. Be with the children who are not able to run and play, but instead must put in a hard day’s work to help their family afford to eat, to live. Be with us all, Christ Jesus, as we go about the busyness of our work. Hold us accountable not only for our actions, but most importantly to each of our neighbors. May we continue to work together to bring about your reign! We ask this in your holy name, through the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

✝️St. Teresa of Calcutta

Daughter of an Albanian businessman who died when Agnes was nine years old. Nun, missionary and teacher in Calcutta, India in 1928. In 1948 she left the convent to work alone with the poor, and became an Indian citizen. She founded the Congregation of the Missionaries of Charity in 1950. In 1957 the Missionaries of Charity started their work with lepers and in disaster areas. She received the Pope John XXIII Peace Prize in 1971, the Jawaharlal Nehru Award for International Understanding in 1972, and the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979, and the Missionaries today work in 30 countries.

ST. MARY’S HISTORY By Brian Regan

👉The Bulletin has information about the opportunity for parishioners to acquire plots in St. Mary’s Cemetery and Fr. Lem has mentioned this in his announcements.

What is the Cemetery’s history? [Part 3]

Fr. McCarthy raised the sacred purpose and dignity of the cemetery by giving its roads the names of saints: St. John, St. Luke, St. Patrick, etc. A drone photo taken by Tom Heller that Carlos Rivera labeled show these and the various sections that are identified by alphabetical letters. See below.

About the cemetery’s 1875 consecration, the Iron Era reported:
“About 1,000 people assembled at St. Mary’s Church to witness the ceremonies attendant upon the consecration of the new cemetery recently purchased and laid out on the fine table of land on the
Phillips property south of the old cemetery. A procession was formed at the church and marched to the cemetery. Arriving at the mound and cross at the center of the grounds, the initiatory ceremonies were observed, after which the Bishop and attendant clergy made the rounds of the cemetery, repeating the
consecration services, and sprinkling the boundary with holy water.”

Bishop Corrigan told the assembly that “the burial place was holy, not only because of the consecration bestowed upon it by the Church, but because of the purpose for which it is designated...and in feeling terms commended it as a place where all might pray that the souls of their friends may rest in peace, and also reflect upon their own end.”

The newspaper said that the new cemetery was six and three-quarter acres and “is indeed a beautiful place and is admirably adapted by reason of location, its gravelly soil, etc, for the purpose.” Burials started near the central circle and year by year moved
outward.

To our Parish Families with Young Children

May we suggest:
• Relax, you and your children are welcome here
• Sit towards the front or aisle, where it is easier for little ones to see and hear.
• Quietly explain the parts of the Mass and actions taking place.
• Sing the hymns, pray the prayers and say the responses. Children learn liturgical behavior by copying you.

If you must go to the back to calm your child, please come back. As Jesus said “Let the children come to me” (Mt 19:14)

To all Parishioners
The presence of children is a gift to our church. Like all of us, they are members of the Body of Christ and a reminder of the growth and future of our Church. Please welcome our children and their parents and give them a smile of encouragement.
