Following Jesus

“Walking along the beach of Lake Galilee, Jesus saw two brothers: Simon (later called Peter) and Andrew. They were fishing, throwing their nets into the lake. It was their regular work. Jesus said to them, ‘Come with me. I’ll make a new kind of fisherman out of you. I’ll show you how to catch men and women instead of perch and bass.’ They didn’t ask questions, but simply dropped their nets and followed.”—Matthew 4:18-20 MSG

Today, we have this week’s scripture from The Message Translation which highlights the powerful moment when Jesus personally invites Peter and Andrew to join Him in a mission far more significant than their daily work as fishermen. The simplicity of their response is striking—they did not hesitate or question; they left everything behind to follow Him. Jesus' call to “follow me” is not just an invitation; it’s a challenge to step out in faith and embrace a new purpose. He promises to transform their lives in ways they couldn’t have imagined. Instead of catching fish, they would catch people, bringing others into the Kingdom of God. As we meditate on this scripture, we are invited to consider our own response to Jesus' call. What distractions or “nets” are we clinging to that prevent us from following Him fully? Are we ready to drop everything and step into the roles He has for us?

Dear Jesus, thank You for calling us to follow You and for the promise of transforming our lives for Your purpose…Amen.

Following Jesus

“Jesus strictly warned them not to tell this to anyone. 22 And he said, ‘The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.’ 23 Then he said to them all: ‘Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me. 24 For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it. 25 What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit their very self? 26 Whoever is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his glory and in the glory of the Father and of the holy angels. 27 Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God.’”—Luke 9:21-27 NIV

In today’s scripture, Jesus speaks candidly with His disciples about the realities of discipleship. He warns them to keep His identity as the Messiah a secret and tells them of the suffering He will endure. This passage emphasizes the profound nature of following Christ. Jesus makes it clear that to be His disciple involves a willingness to sacrifice and endure hardship. The metaphor of taking up one’s cross signifies embracing the challenges and struggles that accompany a life committed to Him. It’s not merely a call to bear burdens but a full acknowledgment that following Him may require us to give up our desires, ambitions, and comforts for the sake of the Gospel. Furthermore, Jesus reminds us of the eternal perspective we should hold. This prompts us to reflect on our priorities. Are we living for temporary pleasures, or are we investing in the eternal?

Lord, grant us the strength to prioritize our relationship with You over worldly desires…Amen.
