Now that the season is over, I am going to step out of my "reporter" role and put on my coach hat. The 2023 Heirway volleyball season has been a blast. I have had teams win more games, but I don't think I have had teams grow more during a season. My varsity team started the season with 9 girls. We had 1 senior, 1 junior, 2 sophomores, 4 freshmen, and a 7th grader to start the season and then we added a second 7th grader for the last few weeks of the season. Despite being essentially a JV team, we played a full varsity schedule that featured public school teams and some of the top ranked teams in the two largest private school associations. My girls didn't back down from any challenge and were in every match. Beyond what they did on the court, I am more proud of the people that my girls are. I have always been one of those coaches that gives away points we didn't deserve. (My only red card ever was for arguing on the other teams behalf.) This year, largely thanks to my captain, Kendall Buhl, the whole team would let the referee know, "Hey, I touched that." or, "That ball was in." The volleyball they learned will be useful for a little while, but character lasts a lifetime and these girls showed character every time they took the floor. So can a 7-15 season be a successful season? I would argue that it can. I am looking forward to watching these girls grow as volleyball players and as women of character and I am thankful to have been a small part of their growth.

The Heirway Christian Academy Lady Eagle's volleyball season came to an end this week. On Monday, Arlington Christian came to Douglasville to face off against both teams. In the middle school match, Heirway came out on top with a 2-0 (25-20, 25-16) victory to end their season. Heirway was led by the serving of Nylah Burden, Rebekah Langston, and Cheyenne D'Amico. Ella Cash also continued her strong play. In the varsity match, Heirway also prevailed, logging a 3-0 (25-15. 25-9, 25-11) victory. Junior Kendall Buhl led the way with a season high 17 aces. She also added 3 kills and 5 assists in the winning cause. Freshman Morgan Froelke, Cali Wilcox, and Abigail Langston all added 3 kills of their own. On Thursday the varsity traveled to Temple High School to close out their season. Heirway played the Temple JV before squaring off against the Temple varsity. With only one senior and one junior, Heirway is essentially a JV team playing a varsity schedule. The Lady Eagles topped the Temple JV in straight sets winning 2-0 (25-18, 25-21). Seventh grader Sofia Froelke led the way with 6 aces and strong defensive play. Junior Kendall Buhl added 4 aces and 4 kills. In the second match, the Temple varsity came away with a 2-0 victory bringing the Heirway season to a close. Heirway's young team finished the year with a record of 7-15. These young ladies worked hard and grew so much as a team. Our first match of the season was also against Temple and last night the first thing the Temple coach said to me after the match was about how much they had improved. The Heirway varsity was made up of Senior Arianna Willi, Junior Kendall Buhl, Sophomores Katie Schlief and Aby Wilcox, Freshmen Morgan Froelke, Hannah Pate, Abigail Langston, and Cali Wilcox, and 7th Graders Sofia Froelke and Ella Cash. They were a blast to coach and I can't wait to see what they do in the future.

The Heirway Christian Academy Lady Eagle's season is winding down. The nest to last week of the season was a busy one for both teams. On Monday, the middle school played host to Holy Ground. The Lady Eagles came out strong to win the first set 25-20 before dropping the second set 20-25. In the decided third set, both teams played hard with Holy Ground coming out on top 15-10. ON Tuesday, Heirway traveled to Arlington Christian School. The middle school team prevailed in straight sets winning 25-21, 25-13. Heirway was led by the strong serves of Ella Cash, Sofia Froelke, and Cheyenne D'Amico. The Heirway varsity team's week was an interesting one. Due to injuries, illness, and travel the team has had to play with cobbled together lineups with people playing new positions. Monday, Holy Ground won 3-0. The Lady Eagles played hard in their unfamiliar positions, but the experience of Holy Ground was too much for the Eagles to overcome. On Tuesday, the Lady Eagles rebounded with a 3-0 victory over Arlington Christian (25-11, 25-15, 25-6). Junior captain Kendall Buhl led the way with 7 aces, 10 kills, and 5 assists. Freshman Morgan Froelke, who has been playing through a nagging back injury that has kept her from serving, stepped up and served 9 aces. Morgan also added 5 kills and 11 assists. Due to the aforementioned missing players, 7th grader Ella Cash was pressed into service with the varsity. Ella rose to the occasion and had a great match. Ella finished with 10 aces and 7 kills. The varsity finished out their week on Thursday with a match at Excel Christian. Still playing shorthanded the Lady Eagles fell 1-3 (19-25, 25-8. 18-25, 17-25). Heirway was led once again by junior Kendall Buhl who logged 10 aces. Sophomore Katie Schlief added 5 aces and 7th graded Sofia Froelke had 4 aces in the loss.

Heirway will finish out the season next week. On Monday both teams will play host to Arlington Christian. The middle school will play at 4:30 and the varsity will play at 5:30. We will be recognizing our lone senior and we will be having a Pink Out. Everyone is encouraged to wear pink. Tuesday Grace Christian is scheduled to come to Heirway for matches at 5:00 and 6:00. On Thursday, the varsity will play the final matches of the season as they travel to Temple High School in Temple, Ga.
