Now that the season is over, I am going to step out of my "reporter" role and put on my coach hat. The 2023 Heirway volleyball season has been a blast. I have had teams win more games, but I don't think I have had teams grow more during a season. My varsity team started the season with 9 girls. We had 1 senior, 1 junior, 2 sophomores, 4 freshmen, and a 7th grader to start the season and then we added a second 7th grader for the last few weeks of the season. Despite being essentially a JV team, we played a full varsity schedule that featured public school teams and some of the top ranked teams in the two largest private school associations. My girls didn't back down from any challenge and were in every match. Beyond what they did on the court, I am more proud of the people that my girls are. I have always been one of those coaches that gives away points we didn't deserve. (My only red card ever was for arguing on the other teams behalf.) This year, largely thanks to my captain, Kendall Buhl, the whole team would let the referee know, "Hey, I touched that." or, "That ball was in." The volleyball they learned will be useful for a little while, but character lasts a lifetime and these girls showed character every time they took the floor. So can a 7-15 season be a successful season? I would argue that it can. I am looking forward to watching these girls grow as volleyball players and as women of character and I am thankful to have been a small part of their growth.
