Jean S. gardener from Building & Grounds Crew with the guidance of Kathy from Katsura Horticultural planting the plugs T. Keenan made it rain with a new frost free spigot. This wildflower meadow is going to be a great tribute to our stewardship testimony. The Spirit grants Grace.

☮️ Pre-Meeting Discussion at Exeter Friends Meeting 🕊️

Join us Sunday, March 22 from 9:30–10:30 AM for a special pre-Meeting discussion: “Hope Amid Uncertainty.”

Joe and Anna Moore will share about members of the Alternatives to Violence Project (AVP) community currently trapped in Gaza and the effort to support several AVP facilitators and their families during this difficult time.

They will offer a brief update and be available to answer questions.

All are welcome.
🕊️ Meeting for Worship will follow the discussion.

Please see the attached flyer for more information and ways to help.

More on the Missing Graveyard -

I've been searching everything I can think of, trying to find something to confirm the graves in the old Friends' graveyard were moved or not prior to it becoming a parking lot.

From what I have gathered so far, the Meeting House was torn down in 1955 and the church who owned it at that time was turning it into a parking lot, although there was no mention of it actually being paved over. Then in 1959 the church sold the lot to the borough for use as a municipal parking lot.

Today I found the following in the "Friends' Journal - A Quaker Weekly" dated November 1, 1958, and it sounds as if the families of the buried we given notice to get their relatives out of there if they so wished.

I still can't say for sure, but it seems possible that some might still remain under the parking lot.

The Friends Meeting House -

The first house of worship in Pottstown was the Friends Meeting House. Said to have been built around 1756 on land donated to the Society of Friends by John Potts, the founder of Pottstown. It was located on the north side of King Street just west of Penn Street. Today this address is 227 King Street.

In 1850, Jesse Ives, a respected citizen, devout Quaker and an abolitionist who was active in the Underground Railroad, recalled that when Washington's army was here in September 1777, he had seen the meeting house being occupied by soldiers.

The original meeting house was described as a one-story brick building, but in 1875 this wood frame structure replaced the original meeting house. This frame building stood for 80 years until February 1955 when the owners, the Christian Missionary Alliance, tore it down for a parking lot.

This is a hi-res scan of the 1914 photo I posted last week. Note the modern curb-cut and driveway leading to the horse shed to the rear of the building. The house just seen to the far left is still standing at 223 King St.
