Labor Day gives us an opportunity to honor the work of our hands and the many ways people serve their families, churches and communities. As we pause from our usual routines, may we give thanks for meaningful work, remember those seeking employment and receive God’s gift of renewing rest.

🙏"Almighty God, you have so linked our lives one with another that all we do affects, for good or ill, all other lives: So guide us in the work we do, that we may do it not for self alone, but for the common good; and, as we seek a proper return for our own labor, make us mindful of the rightful aspirations of other workers, and arouse our concern for those who are out of work; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen."

Any given space can invoke many emotions and feelings, or hold fond and nostalgic memories. This can be especially true for a space as unique and as beautiful as our very own Sanctuary here at St. Gabe's. From Christmas pageants and concerts, to confirmations and baptisms, to weddings and funerals, we have hosted many memories of this community over our years of service.

Today, we honor the feast day of St. Phoebe, a woman from the 1st century that served as a deacon and helper to many in the early church. She held the title of 'prostatis' which was Greek for leader, protector, or guardian. One of her most notable works, she delivers Paul's letter to the Romans

🙏"Eternal God, who raised up Phoebe as a deacon in your church and minister of your Gospel; Grant us that same grace that, assisted by her prayers and example, we too may take the Gospel to the ends of the earth; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen."

Thank God for Teachers

It is sometimes said that public school teachers do not teach values. Yet every day, countless teachers quietly model compassion, patience, integrity and kindness through the way they care for their students.

Many teachers go far beyond lesson plans and classrooms. They spend their own money on school supplies, workbooks, clothing, snacks and special needs for children who may otherwise go without. They encourage struggling students, celebrate small victories and offer steady support to children facing difficult circumstances at home.

Teachers also work with students from many different backgrounds and abilities. Some patiently help children learn English, while others devote extra time and care to students with learning, emotional or social challenges. In a world where many children face poverty, abuse, loneliness, neglect or uncertainty, a caring teacher can become a source of hope, stability and encouragement.

Many educators also serve faithfully in churches and communities, living out their faith through daily acts of love and service. Their influence often reaches far beyond what grades or test scores can measure.

As a church family, let us remember to pray for teachers, encourage them in their calling and thank God for the important difference they make in the lives of children every day.

Join us tomorrow, August 30th for a special Coffee Hour after the 10am service where we will celebrate our wonderful time with our Organist, Sean Reidy. Next Sunday, September 6th, will be his final time playing for our services as he moves on to the next great opportunity in his career. We wish him well!

When we’re faced with unexpected hardship, our first impulse is often to ask, “Why me, O God? Why me?”
Yet when a blessing comes our way, we receive it with gratitude and rarely ask the same question: “Why me, O God? Why me?”
