Two Become One!
My verse of the day.
Ephesians 5:31 (ERV) says, “That is why a man will leave his father and mother and join his wife, and the two people will become one.”
Over the years in ministry, I have often been asked, "Where is your other half?" In one church where Sharon and I served, I was even told I couldn't start the worship service until she had arrived.
Sharon and I are a true ministry team. Throughout the week, we discuss the upcoming Sunday service, and on Sunday mornings, we pray together in the parking lot before entering the building. She ensures I have everything I need, and during the service, she sits where I can see her for support. Afterward, we walk hand-in-hand to the doors to greet the congregation.
On our way to lunch, we discuss the service and she provides feedback on my sermon. Once home, I watch the recording to see what can be improved, and she shares her perspective on the different parts of the service.
We are not the only ministry team in the churches where we have served. Time and time again, I have seen couples who reflect this same unity. When one half of that whole goes to be with the Lord, the pain is profound. I have sat with those left behind, shedding tears and quietly wondering what my life would be like without my wife.
The church must be a place where those who have lost their other half feel loved and cared for. While we can never replace who they have lost, we can be a family that holds them, helps them, and honors the memory of their spouse.
Grieving is a journey we take together as the living body of Christ, until the day when we are all made whole in our eternal home.
