REMEMBERING MARTYRS: On this day in 1999, Graham Staines, along with his two young sons, was conducting a five-day, open-air evangelistic outreach in Odisha state, India. One night, Graham and his sons had retired to their station wagon when a group of militant Hindus set fire to the vehicle; the missionary died holding his boys. Prior to the attack, Graham had used his medical skills in a leprosy hospital in Odisha state (formerly called Orissa), where his wife and daughter remained for five more years after his death. Their martyrdom brought fanatical Hinduism to the world’s attention, causing many to pray for India.
