Four Dothan Churches to Open Storm Shelters

DOTHAN, Ala. (WDNews) — Four Dothan churches will open their doors Friday evening to provide overnight shelter as Houston County prepares for approaching tropical weather.

According to the Dothan-Houston County Emergency Management Agency, the new Shelters From the Storm program was established through partnerships with local churches to provide additional sheltering options during severe weather.

EMA Director Mark Powell told Wiregrass Daily News that the agency is monitoring the need for additional shelters as conditions develop.

Powell said the shelters are primarily intended for residents living in the area's large mobile home communities and those living in older structures that may not provide adequate protection during severe weather or anyone else in need of shelter.

Hotel Availability Limited

Wiregrass Daily News contacted a handful of hotels in Dothan on Thursday to check room availability ahead of Friday night's anticipated weather.

Each of the hotels contacted confirmed they had no vacancies available for Friday night, Oct. 9.

With lodging options already limited at the hotels contacted, Wiregrass Daily News encourages residents who believe they may need to leave their homes to make arrangements Thursday, before options become more limited.

Important Shelter Information

The EMA emphasizes that these participating churches are not certified storm shelters and were not constructed to FEMA storm shelter standards.

While the locations offer additional protection during severe weather, no shelter can guarantee complete protection from every weather-related hazard.

Residents are encouraged to monitor local weather reports and follow the Dothan-Houston County EMA through its mobile app and social media pages for updates.

Powell said officials will continue evaluating the need for additional shelter locations.

Wiregrass Daily News will continue monitoring storm preparations, shelter availability and developments affecting residents and those seeking temporary shelter.

Additional information will be provided as it becomes available.

The 2026 SABA Annual Meeting was a great day of fellowship, encouragement, and worship!

The day began with a Q&A session for our pastors with Dr. Derek Allen, Alabama Baptist State Board of Missions Executive Director-elect.

We ended the day at Pilgrim Home Baptist Church for our annual business meeting and a wonderful time of worship led by the Pilgrim Home praise band, followed by a message from Dr. Allen.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make this year’s Annual Meeting a meaningful time together. We are grateful for our SABA churches and look forward to another year of partnering together for the Gospel!
