Ascension Day

The Collect:
Almighty God, whose blessed Son our Savior Jesus Christ ascended far above all heavens that he might fill all things: Mercifully give us faith to perceive that, according to his promise, he abides with his Church on earth, even to the end of the ages; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen.

The Gospel for the day, Luke 24:44-53:
Jesus said to his disciples, "These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you-- that everything written about me in the law of Moses, the prophets, and the psalms must be fulfilled." Then he opened their minds to understand the scriptures, and he said to them, "Thus it is written, that the Messiah is to suffer and to rise from the dead on the third day, and that repentance and forgiveness of sins is to be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things. And see, I am sending upon you what my Father promised; so stay here in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high."

Then he led them out as far as Bethany, and, lifting up his hands, he blessed them. While he was blessing them, he withdrew from them and was taken up into heaven. And they worshiped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy; and they were continually in the temple blessing God.

On This Day in the News in 1888
Dodge City, Kansas

The Episcopalians of Dodge City held a Lenten service at the Masonic Temple Wednesday evening, the Rev. Mr. Dyer, of Garden City, officiating. After the service, St. Cornelius' Episcopal Mission was organized.

They went on to hold services at the Y.C.A. Reading Room above Mrs. Beadles Millinery Shop on Bridge Street (2nd Ave). In 1893, they moved to a repurposed stone print shop on Bridge Street opposite The Rink. Then, in 1898, they built St. Cornelius' Episcopal Church on First and Spruce Street.

St. Cornelius' Episcopal Church still holds services every Sunday at 10 am. All Episcopalians and any others feeling an interest in the good work are cordially invited to attend.
