The first time we encounter the Hebrew word nes (נֵס) — banner, signal, standard — isn’t in Isaiah.

It’s in the wilderness.

Israel had rebelled. Venomous serpents were biting the people, and many were dying.

Then God gave Moses a surprising command:

“Make a fiery serpent, and set it on a standard…” (Numbers 21:8)

The Hebrew word translated standard is nes.

And God said:

“Everyone who is bitten, when he sees it, shall live.”

Think about that.

The very symbol of the curse was lifted up before the people.

Not because the serpent had power, but because God provided a way of salvation, and the people had to respond in faith.

Hundreds of years later, Isaiah uses that same word:

“In that day the Root of Jesse, who shall stand as a signal (nes) for the peoples…” (Isaiah 11:10)

The Messiah would become God’s banner to the nations.

Then Yeshua makes an astonishing connection:

“As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up.” (John 3:14)

The nes in the wilderness pointed forward to the greater Nes.

The serpent was lifted up so the dying could live.

The Messiah was lifted up so the world could live.

Coincidence?

Or was God planting a picture of redemption from the very beginning?

Isaiah doesn’t say: “The Root of David.”

He says: “The Root of Jesse.”

Why go back one generation? Why return to the father instead of the king?

David was Israel’s greatest king. His name carried power, legacy, military victory. When people thought Messiah, they thought David.

But Isaiah steps behind the throne. He goes to Jesse — the farmer in Bethlehem. The man nobody thought to invite when Samuel came looking for a king (1 Samuel 16). The overlooked father of the overlooked youngest son.

And then it gets even more interesting. In Isaiah 11:1, the Messiah is a SHOOT coming out of Jesse’s stump — a descendant, someone who comes FROM Jesse.

But in verse 10, the same figure is called the ROOT — the source Jesse himself came from.

How can the same person be both the branch AND the root?

Isaiah is painting a picture much bigger than a throne.

When I look around and see people who are truly, deeply hungering for God's Word, I see people who have experienced significant affliction.

They've lived a life of pain and suffering before coming to God, and they desire nothing more than to be in His presence and know His Word.

It's such a beautiful sentiment of how He takes us out of darkness and brings us into His light.

Witnessing an unjust justice system, the anguish of having no good lawyer or judge is palpable. It's a cry to God against oppression, asking, 'How long will you rule unrighteously?' When human systems fail, there's a desperate plea for divine intervention to vindicate the weak.
