St. Andrew's Orthodox Church

St. Andrew's Orthodox Church We are an American community, from all ethnicities and walks of life; come visit and experience the a St. Andrew’s Church was founded in 1966. Fr.

All of our services are in English. We are a parish of the Orthodox Church in America (OCA), which is under the spiritual direction of the Holy Synod of Bishops, led by His Beatitude, Metropolitan Tikhon, Archbishop of Washington and Metropolitan of All America and Canada. We are within the OCA’s Diocese of New York & New Jersey, under the archpastoral guidance of His Grace, the Right Reverend Mic

hael, Bishop of New York, and the Diocese of New York & New Jersey. Our rector is Archpriest John Klingel. John has been involved with our parish since 1994, as an assistant priest. On September 6, 2001, he took over as our Rector, as assigned by the late Archbishop Peter of New York & New Jersey. Since 2008, our choir has been led by Reader Lasha Kvetenadze. We are not a “Russian Orthodox” or “Greek Orthodox” parish. As part of the OCA, our community is filled with members from diverse backgrounds, and we strive to create a parish with an American character. We invite you to learn more about our parish, and more importantly, to experience Orthodoxy first hand by visiting our parish – you are always welcome! If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.

JOYOUS FEAST OF THE TRANSFIGURATION OF CHRIST! Last evening we greeted the feast and celebrated the traditional blessing of fruit. This blessing is a pious custom which finds its roots in the desire of the faithful to bless the first-fruits of the harvest, which become ready around the time of the feast. There is a poetic connection between the harvest and the feast, as we see the tilled earth transfigured in the beauty of the fruit which comes forth from it, just as we see the beautiful fruit of our spiritual labors emerge in our lives.

LIKE THE CHILDREN with the palms of victory, we cry out to Thee, O Vanquisher of death: Hosannah in the highest! Blessed is He that comes in the name of the Lord! 🌿 On the joyous feast of the Entrance of Our Lord into Jerusalem, we welcomed Daniel into the life of the Church, and Anthony into the ranks of the catechumen. Many years! May we be granted strength for the Holy Week ahead!

HOLY TRANSFIGURATION ▫️ It is a celebration of the Uncreated Light: "That same Inscrutable Light shone and was mysteriously manifest to the Apostles and the foremost of the Prophets at that moment, when (the Lord) was praying. This shows that what brought forth this blessed sight was prayer, and that the radiance occurred and was manifest by uniting the mind with God, and that it is granted to all who, with constant exercise in efforts of virtue and prayer, strive with their mind towards God. True beauty, essentially, can be contemplated only with a purified mind. To gaze upon its luminance assumes a sort of participation in it, as though some bright ray etches itself upon the face." – St. Gregory Palamas

At this feast, it is traditional to bring the first-fruits of our gardens (or any fruits or vegetables we may wish to bring from our homes, traditionally grapes or apples) to be blessed and consumed as part of the celebration, a reflection of God’s glory and transforming power which suffuses all creation.

“WHOSOEVER WISHES TO COME AFTER ME, let them deny themselves, take up their cross, and follow Me.” ➕ On the Sunday before Nativity, we celebrated the entrance into the life of the Church of Mary (Kara) and the entrance into the catechumenate of Dawn & Kenny. Following the bright and joyful divine services, we celebrated Gabriella & Nilus with a ‘baby shower coffee hour’ as they prepare to welcome their new child. Many years to all! 🎉

JOYOUS FEAST! 🌿 Greetings with the feast of Saint Sergius the Wonderworker, Abbot of Radonezh (Sept. 25) On this occasion, we were especially blessed with an unexpected visit from His Beatitude, Metropolitan Tikhon, who was on Long Island for a number of upcoming meetings and events. We were very happy to host him and pray along side him on the feast day of his primatial chapel! Holy father Sergius, pray unto God for us!
