has a devotional today that could help those of us struggling and suffering.
Today's Reading: Exodus 5:15-21
Exodus 5:15 (ESV) "Then the foremen of the people of Israel came and cried to Pharaoh,..."
"It's just too hard." Just about anything can cause us to utter these words: job loss, relationship strain, death, depression, anxiety or just life itself.
In today's passage, the Israelites expressed the same sentiment. In fact, their reality was more than hard, it was impossible. Moses had gone to Pharaoh, asking him to let God's people go. Pharaoh didn't just refuse the request, he retaliated. He forced the people to work harder to meet impossible requirements.
What is our initial response when things get too hard? We complain. And that's what the foremen did. First they accused Pharaoh of being harsh. (Exodus 5:15) Then when Pharaoh didn't change his mind, (Exodus 5:17-18) they criticized Moses. (Exodus 5:20-21) I think if we were making those bricks, we would agree with them - Moses promised to save them, but he had only made their lot worse!
How many times have we been going through life when circumstances turn sour? Our hearts want things to be "fair." We wonder, Why? and we tell God, "This is just too hard."
The enemy likes to creep in during this time and fill our minds with doubt. If you are tempted, like me, to tell God this is just too hard, let me offer some hope from the book of Romans. Romans 5:1-5 is a powerful passage, but I love these verses. "... we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame,..." (Romans 5:3-5). Suffering does not mean we are out of God's will nor does it mean God has left us. We have hope because our unique suffering is in God's hands.
When life feels too hard it could be because we are focusing more on the crisis than on Christ. Looking to God's Word during times of great suffering will help us realize God's plan is still going forward (as we will see in our study through Exodus) even in the midst of suffering. Looking to God means we don't try to figure out the why. Instead, we learn to trust God in the unknowns.
God says in our weakness, He is made strong. (2 Corinthians 12:9-10) Friend, if life feels too hard, lean deeper into God today and let Him carry you through this season. Stay close to Him. Pour out your heart and let Him comfort you as only He can.
