Happy Mother's Day!
Devotion based on Matthew 15:21-28:
This text is often highlighted as the Canaanite woman’s faith, and rightly so, because her faith stands out beautifully in the passage. In Matthew 15:21-28, we meet a mother whose heart was heavy because her daughter was suffering deeply, and she did what every godly mother ultimately must do: she brought that burden to Jesus.
This Canaanite woman had no power in herself to fix her daughter's condition, but she knew where to go for mercy. And as the passage unfolds, Jesus is not being cold or uncaring toward her. He is drawing out her faith, testing it openly, and revealing what He already knew was in her heart.
What looked at first like silence and resistance was not rejection, but a divine testing that would put her faith on display. She kept coming, kept asking, kept bowing, and kept believing. She would not let go because she believed there was mercy in Christ for her child. In the end, Jesus honored that faith and said, "O woman, great is thy faith."
So not just the faith of a determined mother, but a merciful Savior who knew her heart, drew out her faith, and answered her cry. What a reminder on Mother’s Day that one of the greatest things a mother can do is keep bringing her children to Jesus.
She may not be able to solve every problem, remove every burden, or heal every wound, but she can keep carrying that child to the feet of the One who is never indifferent and never mistaken in His timing.
From all of us at Lighthouse Baptist Church, we wish all our moms a very Happy Mother's Day!
