Support the Future of Hancock County Youth at the Good Scout Award Dinner:

Scouting America has been making a positive difference in the lives of young people for more than a century, and that tradition continues today throughout Hancock County and South Mississippi. Every week, thousands of Scouts raise their hand and make a promise to live by the values of character, citizenship, leadership, and service. This year's awardee will be Mr. David Mayley.

Through camping, community service, leadership opportunities, and outdoor adventures, Scouts develop confidence, self-reliance, and a strong sense of responsibility. These experiences help prepare young people to make good decisions, overcome challenges, and become productive members of our communities.

To support these life-changing programs, a special Good Scout Dinner will be held in Hancock County on Thursday, July 16, 2026. Guests will arrive at 6:00 p.m., with the program beginning at 6:30 p.m. Community leaders, businesses, and supporters are invited to attend and learn how Scouting America continues to impact local youth and families.

If you would like to attend this Scouting fundraising event, you may RSVP by scanning the QR code no later than July 11 or by contacting Diamondhead Cubmaster Michael Burke at 405-630-8328 (call or text).

If you are unable to attend, please consider making a gift or pledge to support Scouting in Hancock County. Your generosity helps ensure that local youth continue to benefit from the leadership development, outdoor experiences, and values-based programs that Scouting America provides.

Together, we can continue building the next generation of leaders, citizens, and community servants.

12 June - Day 5 - Friday marked the final day of Summer Camp.
The day began with Scouts completing the Mile Swim in Tiak Lake, totaling 16 laps and about 1½ hours in the water. We then headed out for a five-mile canoe trip down Black Creek to Brooklyn, Mississippi, with plenty of time to cool off and swim along the way. We found the lost Eyeglasses - Yay!
After returning to camp for lunch, Scouts participated in the Water Olympics, featuring games, competition, and a few Scoutmaster belly flops. The evening concluded with the closing campfire, filled with jokes, skits, and aquatics humor.
Our Troop was recognized as an Honor Troop before gathering in a Scout circle to sing Vespers.
A great way to close another Summer Camp season.
Good night, Scouts. Until next year.

Black Creek Canoe 🛶 trip 5-Miles with Camp Tiak

Our Scouts greatly enjoyed paddling Black Creek near Brooklyn, Mississippi. They had an amazing time on the water. Do you think they enjoyed the canoeing more, or was swimming in the creek their favorite part? 🚣‍♂️🌊

June 11th - Day 4 at Summer Camp, the troop finished out their final day of merit badge courses. First-year campers got to learn about trash. Just exactly how much trash we dispose of, so they took all of yesterday's items from the trash can, dumped it out, and sorted food, recyclables, plastics, and general refuse. The looks on their faces were pure disgust, but for some reason they enjoyed it.
Good seeing many friendships being generated amongst our fellow Scouts with other troops. One of the competitions today was to do a patriotic statue, and our Scouts decided to do the flag raising on Iwo Jima at Mount Suribachi, very iconic and perfect for remembrance of our 250 years as a country.
The portions at all the meals were enough to satisfy each hungry Scout. Favorite part: the cookies 🍪 Warm and gooey.
Tonight’s game is Staff Hunt.
Parents: Injury report - one Scout slid down a hill and got scraped up. The Army medics took a look and said to have the Troop bandage it up for practice! Real-world First Aid training. Good News: the Lost Scouts pants have been Found!

10 June - Day 3 with Camp Tiak and our Troop. We were met with clear blue skies, which ensured the Mississippi heat would be with us today. Funny jokes and a song about second-story windows started the day. Breakfast was amazing and the best meal of the day; William can attest. A camp can never go wrong with excellent bacon 🥓 on the menu. Off to MB courses for the Scouts, with the highlight being the ROPES course, with Eagle Scout Trip Willis being one of the instructors. These Scouts are brave, jumping from one elevated platform to the next, with Odin secured only by a rope held fast by a fellow Scout. Zip-lining was performed with grace and a bit of screaming on the way down. No judgement! We had a special guest arrive at camp to offer Catholic Mass to the faithful, followed by Order of the Arrow activities. Wednesday at camp is traditionally reserved for OA awareness (I’m sure they have a name for it, but this author is not in the club). Ice cream was provided - oh yeah! The Scouts hit up the Gaga Ball pit and played Jenga and cards! Injury Report: Parents, don’t worry, only minor blisters on toes today. One Scout was so dirty with cooking ash, we believe that his shirt will never be clean again.
Spirits are high, even if some have lost parts of their Scout uniforms. They will turn up.
A funny note: It was so hot today that every Scout had their water bottle, but during the closing flag ceremony, the heavy water bottles dropped from Scouts' sweaty hands, sounding like Main Street Methodist's bell choir as the bottles dinged and donged.

9 June - Day 2 began with our Troop being asked on the spot for a flag-raising detail. Our Senior Patrol Leader Odin H. had confidence and briefed his Scouts with just minutes before. Let’s just say they did awesome. Followed by a Copperhead snake 🐍 sighting! A fun 3-legged game was in the bag until an equipment (knot) failure. No spirit stick for 210! Breakfast was interesting and yum. The Scouts were excited about open swim and movie night being offered, but first off to MB Courses. As the Scouts learned, the Scoutmasters sat in on important adult leader training. Happy to have Eagle Scout Cooper joining us for the day as a visiting Scout. Even Scoutmaster Chad made an appearance. Gagaball was the event for the Scouts after the MB courses ended. The adults had an excellent BBQ meal provided by longtime Scouter Mr. Carroll as the Pine Burr Area Council briefed us on the future of Tiak and the possibilities of an upgraded shooting range being funded.
Parents: The Scouts had one reported injury tonight of gravity pulling a Scout off his bike and a raspberry on a knee; when asked to show off his injury, we had to look twice, as it was difficult to see. These Scouts are excellent. Only a few of the water bottles ended up in Lost-and-Found. Perfect day at Camp!
